Just to create a random thread, what's everyone's jobs and how did you get into that field?
I'm currently a sales supervisor at a factory shop, started as a sales assistant when I left school but got promoted. I'm going for an interview on Wednesday with the Merchant Navy to become a Deck Officer Cadet. Hopefully this won't jinx it!

Work as a cleaner in a Hospital, now it may sound like a crap job and it may well be but you absolutely cannot complain with the pay I get. Been in the job close to 4 years, i'm now NVQ qualified in it and i'm confident I could walk into any other cleaning job whether it's a Supervisor's position or whatnot. Left school at 16 and couldn't find a job anywhere until my Grandad said why don't I try the Hospital? I did and I haven't looked back.

Still in education, but work part-time at Next. Not great pay, but I do really enjoy the people I work with which is the only reason I'm still there. Once I'm done at uni though, am probably heading for a career in banking .

Assistant store manager at Toys R Us in MK. I can assure you all, its not as fun as it sounds, I do an awful lot more than play with toys all day despite what people think! Word of warning, retail is harder than it looks when you get to management. Long, unsociable hours for wages which arent particularly amazing. Im about to enter my second Christmas at TRU and will be doing 6 day 60 hour weeks for a few months. Only go into retail if you really have a passion for it. And also, if you don't do a degree in retail, don't apply for a retail graduate scheme. It takes up places that people like me deserve you bastards

I work in a Hotel Bar. Its the best job I've ever had. The hours might not be great, (lots of nights) but I've got full time hours now (when I started i only had a few shifts a week, I guess to prove I was competent etc!) which gives me a few daytime shifts so its a nice balance! And working nights keeps me from trouble so I can save money for travelling soon. Its the first job I've got since I got outta Uni. Its worth it for the people I work with who are really nice and even management is decent, and the tips (made £25 last night on a 7 hour shift at a wedding!)

I work as a building site labourer. It's horrible some times then again it's heaven when it's sunny. My dad got me the job. It pays for all things like beer and fun. It's not my dream job I'm glad to be working considering the situation with the country.

I am a linguist. I study and document endangered and extinct languages such as Panamint Shoshoni. However that doesn't pay the bills so I work as a freelance translator. My original ambition was to work as a translator for the FBI but unfortunately for me I suffer from a panic disorder which I take medication for which makes me ineligible for any type of military or law enforcement field. I compensate by working on cold missing persons and unidentified cases since anyone can do it because the cases are cold and law enforcement releases the information to the public in the hopes that a match can be made as they have too many current cases to solve. Working in the Navy is an amazing career. I wish you the best of luck!

It's not my dream job I'm glad to be working considering the situation with the country. Getting dual U.K. and American Citizenship is quite difficult. To get to the U.K. I would have to bring over alot of cash and start my own business and provide jobs to those in the U.K.. Honestly my dream would be to launch a line of cat food. I would call it 'Fancy Cat Cat Food' and my slogan would be "Fancy food for fancy cats!", namely poor 9th degree Persian cats. I have one named Pus and he has severe difficulty eating as his nose is higher than his eyes and he has difficulty breathing which only adds to the problem as you can imagine eating normal cat food is difficult and he has to paw the food and lick it off of his paws in order to eat and the only way he can drink is if he is crouching down like a tiger drinking from a river. I have a special container design that would help cats like him be able to lead more normal lives. Sure it isn't your typical dream but I still want to do it.

I work as a Trade Support employee on the Derivatives Desk for one of the largest pension funds in the world, APG (All Pensions Group). In my group, we administer all kinds of derivative transactions that our Front Office in Amsterdam has traded. We also take care of all the financial transactions involved, checks and reconciliations, and so on. It's not the most exciting job right now with the European economical crisis and all, but this is where my figure money comes from. Been working here since April 2001.
I am also a certified RPM instructor for Les Mills since 2005, currently giving one lesson per week (used to be four lessons per week, but the gym I used to work for stopped giving RPM).

Worked at John Lewis as a sales assistant for 10 years last year, had to get out of retail as it was turning nasty to work in. So for the past 13 months i've worked as a soils investigator. Basically working with engineers, surveyors and insurance companies to identify and rectify damage to properties as a result of subsidence and accidental damage.

I was a bar manager for wetherspoons for 4 years, but I always wanted to work with kids (I worked as a playworker from the age of 14 during school holidays.) so last September I walked away from a decent paying job to go back to Uni and do my PGCE, and last month I became a newly qualified primary school teacher

I've not worked since leaving St James' Park (steward) in early 2010. I spent a long time job searching with no success before deciding I had to finally do something about a disability and subsequent hospital visits and surgery has kept me sidelined since around this time last year. I need more surgery in a few weeks time so it'll be February before I can start pursuing my interest in mechanics and anything to do with trucks. And a couple of years further before I can start driving for a living. But I will finally have no barrier to it anymore so I can chase that lifelong dream now.

The Merchant Navy is different to the Royal Navy. The Merchant Navy isn't a member of the forces, it just means working on industrial vessels, such as oil tankers, cruise ships, supply vessels, container ships etc. I'll go in as a Deck Officer Cadet, learning the basics of navigation and safety in the 3 year course, then I get given a sponsor company who are essentially my employers. This would be people like Princess Cruises, P&O cruises, BP etc. It's estimated that you can work your way through exams and make it to Captain of your own vessel within 10-12 years if you work hard and the pay is astronomical. As a Captain you earn £170-£250k a year, tax free if you're out of the country long enough. You get paid generously to see the world and you're in minimal danger as it's not a member of the forces.

Currently unemployed since last year...been pretty hard trying to find anything...started a "Trainee Management" position which was a bit of a scam, and was not what was originally described...working 6 day, 60 hour weeks with no guarantee that's I'd actually make any money...
My job before that was as a bar supervisor in a high end restaurant...left after having an argument with the general manager over glasses...made a rediculous amount of money in wages never mind tips...the most I think I got on one Saturday shift was £300+...that was for a David Price after fight party an was a one off, although at one point I was hitting £150 a night fri and sat nights...
Don't think I really want to go back into the bar game, unless it was a niche cocktail bar or it was my own bar...

Right now I'm temporarily out of work. I sat my SIA course in May so I could get my security badge & passed it succesfully. It looks like I have a job offer on the horizon with a security company so hopefully it comes to fruition this week. Then the job centre apply for my badge for me and then it's on
