Okay so I was flipping channels and came across Goodfellas on AMC. I started watching it and it was already into the scene where Tommy and Spider have there confrontation. So there Tommy goes saying "you've been doing this to me all night mother******" which the word has been cut out giving an abrupt cut to the audio then back to the audio and so on for every curse word. It actually makes the scene unbearable with the sudden jump cuts in the audio to censore the word. Well everyone knows a bit later into the movie after that Spider says "Go **** yourself Tommy" again with the audio cut out but then you blatantly see Tommy shoot Spider with all the blood splatter and everything. This is TV, basic cable to be exact during the 8pm time-slot. So my question is: Why can violence like shooting guns and people being blown up, eaten by monsters, lit on fire, etc... be acceptable but not "curse words"? I'm not pro censorship or against censorship, I just find it funny how one is less severe than the other. Thoughts?

I find it redundant that they show movies that are ridden with F-bombs galore and they are censored through the roof. It's sometimes funny but pointless to show a movie without the cuss words and violence. I was watching Scarface about 2 weeks ago on AMC and I found it pointless to watch the TV version. Sometimes when they reedit the movies and dub over them they are fun to watch.

C. and you know the rest (I can't do it here because it's a kids forum, I get that Jack Specific.) Everyone says it. Lets be honest. I dunno but when did violence on TV get acceptable? I remember seeing Saving Private Ryan on TNT and it "showing" everything but not "hearing" everything. Stupid really.

Look since the F-bomb is basically a part of everyday language among tweens and high school kids, The R rating should be obsolete by society's standards. What is it, 2 f-bombs gets an automatic R rating. So they should reevaluate the ratings system for the least bit. Also Comedy Central used to show Uncensored movies late at night I don't know if they still do or not.

I remember seeing Saving Private Ryan on TNT and it "showing" everything but not "hearing" everything. Stupid really. Look at this way. Kids are are much more likely going to know better than to slaughter people on a beach than to not use coarse language. Language is something easily picked up by impressionable children, especially if it's being thrown around by someone iconic that they look up to. Also look at it from a business point of view. If there's something occurring on one of the programs that you air that's causing people to turn it off, you're going to lose ratings, and more importantly you're going to lose money. On another note--Censoring language isn't going to completely destroy a film as much as removing entire scenes due to violence. That scene in Goodfellas with Tommy is a necessary scene. If you removed every scene with Tommy going insane and killing someone, you'd never see him kill Billy Bats, and you'd never understand why he eventually gets "whacked" as a result of him killing a made guy. The "F" word is used 296 times throughout Goodfellas; however, censoring the word doesn't completely destroy the film's integrity as much as removing scenes of violence. It is annoying, I'll give you that, but that's why I never watch R rated films on television.

ITV(a Channel available in Ireland & The UK) used to do that ALL the time.....Ill always remember when they used to show Aliens and they would turn up the sound of the Pulse rifle fire to obscure Hudsons swearing during his last stand.
similar antics would happen during Robocop and Predator....with swear words being dubbed over with such ingenius terms as "Mother Crusher"........

I hate watching movies on regular television. Absolutely hate it.
I remember watching Water Boy a few years ago and instead of "needle dick" they censored it to "needle neck".
Horrible. Just put in the DVD/blu-ray instead.

I think there should be two types of cable available to people. One would be as it is now with edited programs. The ohter would be non edited and would cost alittle more. I would be willing to pay alittle more (nothing extreme) for non edited channels.

the rules for censoring, most important to least important goes something like this; sexuality > language > violence Bit of a messed up order that we'd sooner see people murder one another than make love. Sexuality is a bit different than just saying, "everything concerning sex, cut it out!" Viewers see implied love making all the time on television, hell, you see it everyday if you watch daytime soap operas. We've even gotten as far as showing bare buttocks on some television shows, The Shield and Breaking Bad come to mind. Certain cable channels show pretty graphic "love making," without showing nudity. I don't think there are really set rules for censoring like the ones mentioned above. It really depends on the severity within the category. I also think that as a society we've become pretty well desensitized to seeing violence. Which I'm sure has a hand in what's considered material worth censoring and what's not.
