In a lot of the events in Madison square garden like RR 2000, Summerslam 1998 and RR 2008 there is no stage just a doorway and a short narrow walkway to the ring. Was there a reason for that or was it a tradition for when the WWE is held there?

I've wondered that too because they've had the stage for Raw there before.

I love that entrance style but I wonder why it's only used in Madison square garden.

I always thought it was something to do with the size of MSG, or something to do with the seating.

The main reason the WWE doesn't use the entrance ramp in MSG is so they can pack in more fans, plain and simple. With the Raw or Smackdown entrance ramps several seating sections are closed off which limits the number of seats that can be sold for any particular show. When the WWE has big events (Mania, S.S. etc) at MSG they don't use the big stage and they pretty much pack that place to the rafters. I think MSG holds around 19,000 for hockey, add a few hundred more on the floor and your probably looking at at least 20,000 fans in the building

I love it at royal rumbles because you can see the entrance and see the action at the same time, they should move Royal Rumble there permanently imo

It really sucks that they refurbished MSG & that entrance is no longer there :/

It all came down to them trying to get more people in the building. My uncle's bleacher company was responsible for thenew seating during the renovation & if I remember correctly they put seats in place of where that walkway was. I'm not 100% sure but I want to say like 80%

Even though MSG was refurbished, couldn't they still have a similar set up? I don't see why not.

To answer the question...even though a few of you already gave the answer, it was used simply to pack in as many people into the Garden.
That tunnel walkway, however, is gone due to the renovation. There is a small pathway in the same area...but it leads to the new event level suites located under the lower bowl of the arena. Kiss those unique entrances goodbye; from here on out, it'll be typical entrance sets to the side like at every other arena.

Believe me, I was also disappointed when I walked into MSG for Survivor Series '11 and noticed the absence of the classic set-up.

Aside from selling more tickets and having more fans attend, its just a nice, unique asset that other arenas didnt offer.
Whether it was used as the entrance for a PPV or RAW, or as a background screen, it was a great addition that made the night feel that much more special.

I always loved the MSG style set-up because it always remained with an old-school look and feel when every other entrance become overblown and all HD.

I can see WWE hosting Raw and Big 4 PPVs @ MSG and SmackDown + the other PPVs in Brooklyn from here on out after the renovations are done at The Garden.

I was thinking, instead of having the huge stage, where some seating must be cut off, where they come out from behind the stage, have 3 screens on the ground, 2 for entrance videos, the last one play their minitron where they enter in front of. Would give a MSG feel to it.

The need for luxury seating ruins old stadiums and arenas. MSG is just another victim.
