In no way is this an opinion poll inquiring about individuals' beliefs on gay marriage, or whether you think it's right or wrong...simply an observational/sociological question - will gay marriage ever come to the deep south? Obviously states in the northeast are much different, with Massachusetts having had gay marriage for 9 years and NY state acquiring it in 2011. The deep south, however, is almost like a different country (and was during the Civil War). Will states like Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia, etc. ever have gay marriage? 50-100 years? 100-200 years? 200 + years? Never? Obviously there are cities like Houston and Atlanta in the south that are progressive, but the people in these cities are heavily outnumbered by the people in the small, rural towns (when all of the small, rural towns are added together).
I don't feel like the rural towns will ever vote for gay marriage, but they may cease to exist with more people moving to cities with each passing generation. In that case, even the red states will be composed of cities and will indeed vote for gay marriage. I could see this happening in 50-100 years.

We are slowly loosing the small minded, meaning those 60 years or older, that were born with the man and woman rule. People are becoming more open minded. I feel that it should be legal. We shouldn't have the right to take the right of marriage from anyone. Of course aslong as its human wedding human. Maybe the government will see, with the wedding license, that it will add a profit to each state, as the main southern states have their own gay community. Say 200 weddings per year, at $100 per license. Thats $20,000 annually that could benifit schooling per state. That alone should be the pitch. Being from the south, I know race and sexual status is taken very seriously. But hey, Obama is president. So we should now be able to throw all that "old school" crap out of the window and be as one, not divided!

When the Supreme Court rules it legal they will have to. This is true. The question, of course, is when. In high school, my government teacher used to tell us that in 40 or 50 years, he hoped the gay marriage point would be as moot as the interracial marriage point is today. I'm not sure we'll ever get to that level, but I hope we do. Truthfully, I think America will undergo some dramatic shift, be it a major natural disaster, a catastrophic attack, or a full scale revolution that will be so huge in scale and effect us so greatly that we won't have time to consider same sex marriage an issue worth even debating. Again, the question is when.

Again, the question is when. To some degree, it happened with the economic collapse and bank bailouts in 2008. We now have a sitting president that supports it, and several former living presidents that do as well (Carter, Clinton, etc.). He is a president that obviously represents blue states where cities outnumber small towns, however, and so that doesn't change the fact that only 9 states have it. Ah well, we'll see what happens.

Pretty much like Slappy says. Until its forced upon them, no it never will be. Its not just the "small minded old people either" The South is rich in their beliefs/traditions where even the younger generations still follow these beliefs.
At the same time, I really dont see the Federal Gov't stepping up and making it some law that's forced upon people either. I think it will always be a subject that's "voted on" during elections by the people and thus I really dont ever see it being passed. Of course Im not counting Florida as "deep south" either as about the only thing "southern" about the state is the location on the map.

Northern Florida is pretty conservative, lots of old school southern towns and counties. Then as you move southward, many Hispanics, Yankees, Jews etc. that have moved and settled there, and definitely not southern at all as you mentioned.

It may become "legal" but the people from where I am and below will never be open minded enough to live and let live.

Eventually. Not as soon as people would like it, but eventually. Changing perception takes time and generations dying off.

They had their first vote on it in 60 years a few days ago and it stayed dry by 50 votes. So they're getting close to being at least 1980- modern. Not quite there yet.

At some point, but not for a really long time. Most of the south needs to enter the 21st century for this to happen.

When the Supreme Court rules it legal they will have to. Agreed. That's why I voted option 1: 'Yes (sooner than 50 years)'.
