Was anybody else surprised by how long Bob Backlund lasted in the 1993 Rumble match?
He had just returned to the WWF after a ten-year absence and lasted over an hour!
Aside from a forgettable match at WrestleMania IX against Razor Ramon, he really didn't do much afterwards. He eventually got a push a year and a half later portraying a crazed lunatic, but I always wondered why they made him look so strong during the Rumble match only to do nothing with him.

It was a way to get the fans behind him, not really many people knew who he was when he returned.

I knew who Backlund was, because I was 12 years old at the time, and remembered seeing the Iron Sheik beat him for the WWF Title on a WWF Coliseum Video years before. But I felt he didn't fit in with the 1993 era of wrestling. It was like someone took him out of 1983 and brought him 10 years forward, it just didn't fit.
Backlund didn't fit the "New Generation" feel until he went heel and crazy like, and was putting everyone in the cross face chicken wing.

Even for 1993, Backlund just looked like old news. That was a time for gimmicks in the WWF and Backlund had no such thing. He was almost too bland. Phenomenal wrestler though. He had a bunch of great matches upon his return to the company.
