Something that really confuses is me is the fact that Jim Neidhart agreed to do that DX storyline and let them completely humiliate him after everything that happened with the screwjob.
He could've just walked out with dignity.

I'd heard he had no choice. he was under contract to WWF,and Vince wouldn't release him from it unless he did that little mini-angle on his way out.

Ya know, for a moment I was excited to see Jim in DX. I had all these scenarios of his future playing out in my head and then.... BOOM, Low Blow!

Neidhart never fitted in DX, they already had a henchman in Chyna.

Him and Bulldog never should have left... God, imagine if Bulldog didn't leave for WCW. That was the run, that he messed up his back on that stupid Warrior trap door, and got addicted to the pain killers.

Him and Bulldog never should have left... I agree, but Vince shouldn't have let Bret go either. Think of all the classic matches we missed out on... Bret vs The Rock, Mr Ass, Triple H, Mankind, Angle etc. I also wonder what his role in the invasion would have been. Neidhart said in a shoot that he wish he'd stayed in the WWF.

Did Bulldog ever make an appearance in WWF after the Screwjob and before he debuted in WCW?

Bret goes through this in his book. Owen wanted out after Montreal too, but Vince refused to let him go. Eighteen months later, he'd find himself suspended 78 feet above the ring dressed as the Blue Blazer. So, in hindsight, refusing to let Owen out of his contract cost Vince $32 million.

Did Bulldog ever make an appearance in WWF after the Screwjob and before he debuted in WCW? Bulldog never appeared in WWF until 1999 after the screwjob, it cost him $150k to get out of his contract. I remember reading he had to sell his flag and cape just to raise the cash. Surely Bret could have paid the release fee for Smith, he was $3.5m p.a when he signed with WCW.

Bret tried to pay for Owen to get out of his contract, but Vince Russo dobbed him in to McMahon and Vinnie Mac phoned Bret telling him if he interfered in Owen's contract that he'd "sue him with a smile on his face". I think it cost Bulldog something like 100k. Mick Foley also tried to leave. And Crush and Rude also left. Not being able to get out of his contract cost Owen his life. I think that had Bulldog and/or Neidhart stayed in the WWF that Owen probably wouldn't have ended up in the Blue Blazer gimmick.

I hate to keep going back to Bret's book like it's the Bible or something, but he also said that by the time Montreal happened Bulldog's life was already unraveling. He had been coping with injuries, as well as addictions issues, for a while and seemed to totally fall apart following his embarrassing loss to Shawn at One Night Only. Davey, who was scheduled to win, dedicated the match to his terminally ill sister, but Shawn being Shawn in those days threw a fit and Vince changed the finish the day of the show. "I saw the light die in Davey's eyes that day, darkness seeping into a heart that was giving out." (Hart, 440)

He was already addicted to pain killers among other things far before the trap door incident. Davey was going to die regardless.
