Lets be hypothetical for a moment and assume the rumors are true. Apparently before the Curtain Call HHH was slated to win the KOTR 1996. So lets say he did, where would this have put Austin? Would HHH have achieved fame earlier or would he just go back to midcard status and just become another forgotten KOTR?

personally,I think he would've just stayed a midcarder. it helped him in 1997 that the win launched a red-hot feud with Mankind. in 1996, he would've feuded with...Jake Roberts?

He was going to be a main eventer at some point no matter. There were also rumors he was suppose to be the Corporate Champion (instead of Rock) but he suffered the knee injury. So it's obvious WWE had plans for him all along.

I think the only thing it would have changed is that we never would have got the Austin 3:16 promo.

it isnt a rumor he was pencilled in to win it.but its a good thing he didnt.he would have just been forgotten in 1996.
his win in 97 was better timing because his feud with Foley was instrumental in getting him over.IIRC correctly he was in consideration to become the Coperate Champ at SS98 for sure.HBK was pushing hard for him with Vince but then he was of course injured so we will never know.
the HHH vs Rock feud from the summer of 98 was a great boost for BOTH men.
quite honestly it was one of THE best business decisions Vince ever made.Austin 3:16 was born on that night......so that made it instantly better than a HHH win.

Would it have been Jake in the finals though if it was Triple H??
I figured it would have been Triple H vs. Marc Mero in the finals, since they seemed to be feuding around that time frame.

I think Austin would eventually started getting over enough to be a main eventer. He was right for the times. Austin 3:16 would have never been coined, unless for some reason he did a program with Jake and it just hit him. With this, would you think HHH would have made it before Austin?

Im not inclined to think so......as KOTR he may have gotten a program with HBK though.didnt start panning out for HHH until he had dropped the snob gimmick and had that very important run as a face in 98. things worked out WAY better or him the way they went.

If Triple H won the KOTR in 96 I have a feeling he would be under the "Mabel and Billy Gunn" list for KOTR winners.
The 97 win seemed perfect for him!! If anything getting taken out of the 96 win benefited the WWE, Austin and Triple H.

IMO the KOTR win is not what launched Austin into the upper card. Yes it did give us the Austin 3:16 promo, but remember that after winning the KOTR in June, Austin was on the Free For All against Yokozuna at SummerSlam in August! Austin rose up the card because he was given a feud with Bret Hart that fall and was handpicked by Hart himself.
I think this is also why a 97 win was better for HHH. Had we won in 96, and then not been given an upper card feud with a top star like Austin was, he would have continued to muddle around the mid card. It was his win in 97 IN ADDITION to a good feud with Mankind that elvated him.
So really, I dont think the title of "King of the Ring" alone in actuality did much for Austin or HHH.

He would have flopped hard in 1996. Like others said his win in 97 and big push was in large part due to Mick Foley. That and the fact that he was just about to join DX as well. Had he won in 96, he wouldn't have gotten the run from Foley, and he wouldn't have joined DX as HBK was the top face at the time. I can't think of a face big enough to give HHH the rub he needed to get over in 96.

Austin would have been huge regardless. That guy was on such a roll, no one could have stopped him. Feuding with Bret Hart was the icing on that cake.
HHH in 1996, I think, would have been overshadowed by everything else and forgotten about. Granted, HBK was pushing for HHH to be Corporate Champion, but that was late '98. HHH was already over as a huge face by then. In 1996, even with HBK's backing, HHH wasn't going to amount to a lot. Especially with HBK himself in the world title picture.
