This morning my girlfriend was doing our laundry and picked up the pants I was wearing last night. She didn't check the pockets and for the first time, my wallet and Iphone 5 went through the wash for about 5-10 minutes. When I realized it I brought my items back upstairs and put the phone in rice.
I was pretty angry but didn't take it out on her, she was only trying to do our laundry and be helpful. Shes insisted to pay for a new one and feels terrible, but without a contract thats going to be at least $600+.
I'm not trying to break my girlfriend's bank and told her I would pay for it if I need a new one and she could pay me back whenever she could afford to, if she wanted to. Obviously I'd rather repair it if possible but have no clue what is within possibility. Has anyone else shared my experience submerging your phone in water and what was the result? Did you have to buy a new phone, did soaking it in rice work, or did you have to have it repaired?

Yeah I've had a couple occasions where I dropped my phone in water and obviously it didnt work, so I rolled it up in a towel and just waited it out and it worked again. I have never tried the rice thing, but I heard it works well since the rice absorbs. Good luck ma man!

yeah the rice should absorb the water, obviously if you leave it for a few hours before putting it in rice it probably wont be as effective...

Just make sure you let the hpone sit in the rice in a sealed container. Rice is very absorbent and if you leave it for about 24 hours, you should be alright.
It doesn't have a 100% success obviously, but I have had friends who have done it and their pone works fine.

I tried it and it did not work. My phone was broken anyway so that didn't help either. Take it to apple and they might ever save it or give you a refurbished one for a decent price.

Did you have to buy a new phone, did soaking it in rice work, or did you have to have it repaired? This happened to me literally 2 months ago except it was only my phone. Since I'm not constantly on my phone I didn't mind not having it for a while but eventually I decided it would be best to buy a new phone rather then replace it. I never heard that rice could absorb the water from the phone so by all means try that if you rather not pay an additional $600.

I'd broken my iPhone 3GS screen a few months ago, then a few weeks later I dropped it in the swimming pool. I put it in rice for 2 days and everything recovered apart from the actual phone functions and the buttons on the side, which was pretty decent. Got a 5 as soon as it came out. The rice trick really does work well.

Thanks guys, all helpful stuff so far. I'll leave karma when the time limit is up . My question to those who have tried the rice.. Do I need to shuffle the rice around or reposition the phone to a dryer part of the rice? Does it matter?

Do I need to shuffle the rice around or reposition the phone to a dryer part of the rice? Does it matter? I tried it, just make sure it's COMPLETELY submerged and covered in the rice; it may be a pain in the ass picking out a few stray grains after it's all said and done; but it worked pretty damn well for me. I put it in and just left it for about 10 hours, don't fiddle with it, don't keep checking on it, just leave it.

Didn't work for me. Your warranty is up also. Look through the headphone hole. If its pink, water damage and if its white, well it's fine.
EDIT: On the right side of the phone there's a little hole. Take a paperclip, bend it and push it in the hole. Your memory card should pop out. When you go into the store for a new phone bring this and you can insert it into your new phone and it will have the same memory.

i've had success with the rice trick but it was a crappy flip phone...and some things were permanently screwed up, like the speakers crackled a lot.

This happened to me once before. My ex-girlfriend had my phone on her side of the bed & during the night knocked a glass of water over & my phone was sitting in water over night. I had a flip/keyboard phone. I left it sitting in a bowl of rice for several hours. Before I did, I couldn't see anything on either screen. After, if I opened the phone up I could see everything one the bigger inside screen. The small screen on the outside was fried. So I had some success with this, it was enough to get me through the final few months of my phone contract (no phone insurance). I actually did this a couple of times for a few days.

After about 24 hours of rice, I took out my iPhone 5 and plugged it in to my computer. Its charging! I don't want to get too excited yet but I'll take that as a good sign
** Edit **
Never mind, it stopped charging and now there is a tiny red light on it, which i assume means water damage
