three of the top guys in the wwf attitude era, (stone cold, rock, hhh) all held the intercontinental championship twice before they became wwf champion.
so how does the ic belt compare now days as far as being a build up to the main event?

The WHC is the equivalent of the IC title from the 80s/90s.

The WHC and the IC title are irrelevant these days. IC belt was always a stepping stone to main event status; Rock, Austin, HBK, HHH, Warrior, Hitman, Angle, Benoit, etc.
These days the IC match gets bumped to preshows and the WHC match opens wrestlemanias. And sometimes lasts 11 seconds.

as said the WHC is the modern day version of the old IC title.heres a staggering list of dudes who had the IC tenure first before coming WWF World Champion

Chris Benoit
Eddie Guerrero
Randy Orton.
all held the IC strap when meaningful feuds were being Built around it and it was used to elevate them.perfect example being the Orton vs Cactus Jack feud.
then there was some of the best ever that never held the WWF title BUT were still meaningful IC champs that headlined shows and were champs when the belt had LUSTRE.both kayfabe and in real life.

The WHC is the equivalent of the IC title from the 80s/90s. This is exactly what I was coming in here to say. I kinda hate that too. I wish they'd get rid of the WHC and put focus back on the IC |

WWE needs to unify the WHC & WWE World titles and the I.C/U.S titles, too many titles makes it confusing to who is holding what, thus making them irrelevant to the fans.
It was so much easier in the 80's/90's

It was so much easier in the 80's/90's Exactly. I'm not following WWE these days, so I don't know if Raw and SmackDown are considered separate still. What I do know is things work better when there's belts for one heavyweight, one middleweight, and one tag team. Same applies to stables, really...one main event guy, one mid-card/IC level guy, and one tag team. Look at the success of DX in '98, pretty much sums it up. Same could be said for the Nation in that same time, if you consider Rock a main eventer between Summerslam and Survivor Series, Mark Henry and D'Lo as tag team material, and Owen Hart as the IC level guy. Too many titles takes away the relevance of being a title in the first place. What's the point in being WWE's heavyweight champion when there's another guy in the same company that can say he has the exact same credentials? |

It was so much easier in the 80's/90's I'd tend to agree.... But the roster is so big and the booking is so poor at the moment that it would leave so many people without anything to do. |

The roster is probably a similar size to the Attitude Era. They should have:
WWE Title - Main eventers - Cena, Punk, Orton
IC Title - Mid-card/upper mid-card - Ziggler, Swagger, Miz, Barrett, Cesaro
European Title - Lower mid-card - Ryder, Clay, Riley, Otunga, Gabriel
You could even have people like Sandow drop down temporarily for feuds over the European Title. It's a shame that you only see those lower mid-carders in squash matches, whereas back in the day they would be facing each other on Raw and SmackDown.

The Intercontinental Championship is garbage now. It has been held by Val Venis, Chyna, A-Train and isnt even defended on PPV anymore. Winning the belt means you are the best midcarder in the company and nowhere in the main event picture.

The fact that Wade Barrett is like a 3 time IC champion now is just absurd and ignorant. He's done absolutely NOTHING since he's had the title any of those times.

Winning the belt means you are the best midcarder in the company and nowhere in the main event picture. this. at one point the IC Title was highly sought after,and really coveted to have because it showed the office had an interest in elevating you,and generally an IC Title reign was used to gauge whether a wrestler could potentially be elevated to the main event/World Championship level. now,it's just another prop.it's essentially meaningless. rather than give someone a Title and see how they do with it,and if their reign could be considered successful enough to go to the next level. these days,people are given a Championship with the thought process that being a Champion will get them over,instead of getting themselves over and thereby raising the prestige of the Belt they hold. guys like Perfect,Hart,Bulldog,Savage,HBK, Triple H, The Rock,Austin,Razor,etc. were given the IC Title to help see if they could make the Championship a hot prize to covet. guys like Miz,Barrett,Kingston,Santino,etc. are given the Title cause creative hopes it will get them over with fans. |

guess what I'm trying to say is a Title used to be a reward for doing a great job,showing commitment,and proving you have the skills to go to another level. your being given the belt added prestige to it,cause you were already a good to great worker,and someone the office thought had a bright future.
now,it's given to guys in the belief that being able to say they're a Champion will be what it takes to elevate them to the next level. like Flair said, A Title used to only be given to the best wrestlers. now it's used in the mistaken belief that being given a Title will somehow make them one of the best wrestlers.

The WHC is what the IC Title use to be. I find it a joke that we have two world titles when the brands aren't even split anymore. It was fine where the shows were separate, but now that we see both world champs on both shows, it makes both titles look weak. The WWE needs to unify the two world titles now.
