Like many of you, I received my elite 21 Honky Tonk Man in the mail this week. Upon unboxing this guy, I was so blown away by mattels execution of this figure; IT IS PERFECT.
However, I can't help but notice a glaring hole with not only this figure, but the rest of my 80s and early 90s collection...
we desperately need that classic ESR that was cancelled. ok, ok so mattel says sales weren't great for the raw one (even though they are going for high prices at the moment). So I started thinking about how we could get one, so hear me out and let me know what you guys think...
A RSC or matty exclusive obviously comes to mind. While it is a large size item, I have little doubt that it could sell at he price of the raw one, especially in a niche market. Now I know there will be naysayers that will point out that $20 figures haven't sold out quickly, and that may be true. So here's my other idea, what if mattel tried making ring gear packs like jakks use to do with their hardcore ring? It would basically consist of 4 colored ring posts, the skirt, ropes and turnbuckle covers...maybe even steps? This would act as an 'add-on' pack for the existing ESR. This would eliminate production of the rest of the ring, which I imagine is costly and it wouldnt take up a lot of retail space. Again, if they don't want to try retail, RSC or matty is still an option. This could also cover other eras and ppvs throughout time that I'm sure collectors and completionists would love.
So that's my 2 cents, what do you guys think? Good, bad, stupid?

I like the idea, but I doubt it will happen. Until it does, I reccomend the WM or WM2 Real Scale Ring.

As someone that's a Legends/Flashbacks only collector....I completely disagree. While Mattel makes great figures, their rings are far inferior to Jakks rings. Im sorry but the Elite Ring is entirely too big especially for the Mattel scale. ON top of that, the fact that IF they do release the ring, we'd never get any sort of accessory like a cage...I would rather just pass on it and keep my Jakks Ring which is beyond perfect and scaled perfectly.

Yes a ring similar to the hasbro blue one would be nice. Maybe have it come with some belts or something.

Well that's the thing, I DO have the old jakks ones but I personally can't stand them in comparison to the mattel one. The jakks ones have those crappy loose ropes and I hate how the mat and skirt is one piece. On top of that it just doesn't look as solid as the esr and feels like it's a going to fold in half when I pick it up...not to mention the leg supports always fall out...yeah I still want a new one.

Would love to see it but doubt it will happen. If you have an esr, just buy some custom skirts. Never had the rsr, but it looks sweet too.

Sales were poor. The major retailers refused to order/reorder it so they had to sell it to Big Lots at discounted prices. So that was a failure to Mattel. And seeing people passed on it b!tching about the original retail price when it first showed up at TRU. ($60) to make it an exclusive to Matty it would cost at least twice that before shipping, because of the smaller production runs for Matty. They won't do it because they know it'll sell poorly as a Matty exclusive.
I do like the idea of an accessory pack of stairs, red/white/blue ropes and ring aprons. But I doubt they'd do it.

I think Mattel should just release another Spring Ring in the classic paint scheme (not the TTT Ring colors) a yellow Royal Rumble or a later 80's version and leave it at that. Maybe it could even be released as a play set with the stairs, ring bell, maybe a camera or classic colored chair with a legends Warrior and Bret Hart (basic rumble attires) It could be re-releases for all I care.

Good luck convincing retailers, they're the ones who don't want them...sucks.

But as far as on topic, they have said this wont happen. Sad, as i feel playset variety and set pieces is where mattel falls short.

naparo makes posts, ropes and ringskirts for the esr.
Matty won't be getting anymore WWE exclusive figures......let alone giant rings.

Meh, yeah I hear you guys...just wishful thinking is all. Its just such a shame considering that they likely had prototypes made. I had my heart set on getting it when it was announced way back when with the andre that eventually was released. I do really like the idea that was mentioned of doing an 80s ring playset with 2 basic legends like those exclusive sets that came with the weapons and such....that would be great! It just sucks knowing what could have been and then looking at all of these awesome flashbacks being made without a proper ring.

Amen!
I don't know why they couldn't do a preorder via Castle Greyskull.....if they don't get enough pre orders then it doesn't happen!

I think your best bet is to try to customize an ESR into the 80's look

I think your best bet is to try to customize an ESR into the 80's look Yeah, but what if I want to display both Raw and Classic rings. Now I have to shell out another $400 just to get the frame to put on the Classic deco. I still think Mattel should at least look into making either bigger basic or smaller Elite rings. I don't see why we can't get an 18"x18" ring. The basic rings are just too pathetic.
