Two Sussex County boys thought it was funny when they began shooting plastic pellets at people at a neighbor’s garage sale, but the fun ended when the husband of a woman who was shot caught up with the boys and assaulted one of them, the county prosecutor’s office said. After his wife was shot in the arm with an Airsoft gun, William Zerden Jr., 44, of Vernon, chased the two boys into a house where one of them lived, and grabbed and shook one of them, First Assistant Prosecutor Jerome Neidhardt said.
“If he (Zerden) stopped at the door, that’s what he should’ve done, but he went in. He went a little too far,” Neidhardt said. “You just can’t barge into somebody’s house.”
Neidhardt said the orange-tipped guns shoot about 40 to 50 feet, depending on the model, and they “leave a sting.”
“Mr. Zerden got pretty upset” after his wife was struck, Neidhardt said. “The two boys thought it was fun.”
Zerden is expected to be arraigned in May on a charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was indicted last month.
The two boys, whom Neidhardt believed were about 15 years old, were charged in Family Court. Neidhardt said he could not say how the case against them was adjudicated because the boys are juveniles.
The incident occurred in August in the Highland Lakes section of Vernon. The case was investigated by Vernon Patrolman Stephen Rovetto.
Zerden is being represented by Sussex County public defender Kevin McLaughlin, who was unavailable for comment.
This man did what any husband would do. In this day and time if things are let go they will go on and the next time it could be a real gun. Kids are kids and they do not think. This was a wake up call to them. I hope they will think twice before doing a "dumb" act again. If you tell parents the parents usually will defend their kids and say they did not do that. There is no punishment. Most of the time nothing is ever said and done. And grabbing and shaking a punk is "criminal mischief"?!
Thoughts?

Been told this many times, but first time I've said it myself: The law is an ass. I would have probably been really p'ed off too if my wife got shot. This kind of thing doesn't surprise me. Basically if a burglar breaks in to your house, tries to steal YOUR possessions that you worked hard for, and you assault them, YOU can go to prison for excessive force. As if I'm gonna let them in and make tea for them. No I'm gonna do what anyone else would: baseball bat to the knees and call the police.

Well a there was a 4th grade teacher in my school who allegedly shook a boy when he yelled at him and he got fired for assault or something like that. Anyway I can see why they indicted this man because he shook one of them

What do you gain by physically assaulting a child? Its a stupid excuse, but we all do dumb crap as kids. We as adults need to tech them why its wrong and hope they learn from it. I don't think the man should face charges or it, but I don't think he was right either.

See this is what is wrong with society today. Back in my day, kids had respect and fear of adults. We knew as kids our asses would get beat by not only the person that we would have done that to if we actually did, but then we'd get it from our parents as well. Now it's all ass backwords and turned upside down. Adults have to fear kids and kids have ZERO respect for adults these days. Big deal the guy 'shook' the kid. Give me a break, it's not like he hit or beat him. Of course I do not condone beatings of kids or anyone, but these disrespectful kids who think they can do anything to anyone need to know if they do it there will be consequences.

I don't think the man should face charges or it, but I don't think he was right either. I wouldn't call that assault. In fact, just shaking the kid was probably an act of restraint. I'm sure he was thinking of doing much worse to the little brats. To me, it's not the fact that a woman got shot by an airsoft gun. It's the fact that these kids are FIFTEEN and think that it's okay to shoot random people with those things. Something is wrong with that picture. And I don't care how people feel about "beating your kids". I'd have never done something like that because I knew that the front side of my mom or dad's hand or belt would be meeting my backside if I did. Don't get me wrong, kids do stupid things. But shooting people with beebee guns isn't your average, everyday screw up by a fifteen year old.

Spanking your child is quite different then chasing a kid and grabbing them and stuff. Why not knock on the door and tell the child's parent, letting THEM discipline the child? I would feel like a fool chasing a little kid like that.
My stance isn't that he shook the kid. Its that he chased the kids into their house and did it. That's stupid.

Some kids just have zero respect. I would never dream of doing something like that when i was their age.

The problem is kids really are above the law and more and more of them are realising this. These two little SOB's getting a beat in would probably have done them the world of good as they would have realised there are consequences for there actions.
shooting someone with an air soft gun is more than just kids messing around in my book.

Not because I didn't think bad things seemed fun, but I knew if I did those things, my ass would be tanned when I got home. Kids feared parents when I was growing up.

He went a touch too far by breaking into the house. Had he not gone into the house and shook them outside, I think it wouldn't have been as big a deal. I don't blame him for doing it, but as an adult he should have known to stop at the door and call the police.
People just don't think. What if he went after them in the house, and they got a real gun and shot him. People risk their lives for such pointless situations these days, and never think about how bad something could turn out.
Hopefully they let him off real easy, just a fine or community service and no record. But he could have escalated a bad situation and made it a tragedy.

Lets face it had he called the police they'd have done nothing. The police in our town have showed up to contain the neighbors dog who goes after children, adults, police. The police have the nerve to tell you its never been reported before even though you have reported it 5 or 6 times yourself and it happens atleast 5 times a week. The dog is vicious and he even tries breaking down your door to get to you. Even after attempting to maul the police man multiple times they hadn't done anything. I am sorry but that police man should have tasered the dog or shot him. I am sure someone higher above is friends with that family as it gets loose and tries to attack someone almost daily.

I'm 26 but growing up i had a "healthy fear" of my parents. I loved them to death and probably annoyed the hell out of them because I was so clingy but I knew at the end of the day if I messed up I was getting my butt busted. I got whippings all the time and looking back, not a single one was unwarranted. I didn't really fear them. I feared the consequences they would throw at me if I misbehaved. By the time I was a teenager I had so much respect for my parents that I didn't fear the consequences anymore, instead, I feared disappointing them. I feel like I owe a lot to them. I'm a homeowner, happily married, and I work as a child care counselor at a boys home- all at 26- All because I grew up respecting the hell out of everyone I met and being held accountable for my actions and bahavior. Also, I can't believe I typed all that out from my phone and then realized this post was 3 years old.
