The "You're Marty" quote really pisses me off sometimes. Its really not fair especially looking back at some of the 80s Tag Teams. Like for example...
Person A- He and his tag team partner split. His partner goes on to become a World, IC, Tag Team and European Champion and is a Hall of Famer. Person A has drug problems that "holds his career back" Person A goes on to become IC champion and a Tag Team Champion. So he has "mild" success.
Person B- He and his tag team partner split. His partner goes on to become a World, IC, Royal Rumble and King of the Ring winner. He also becomes a Hall of Fame member. However, Person B has no success afterwards. Holding 0 titles and like Person A has problems with drugs and keeping his job.
So looking at that, you see two guys who were in Tag Teams and their partners went on to be 2 of the best wrestlers of all times. Yet, between these two guys, one has success and the other falls flat on his face. Person A has success and we bash him, Marty Jannetty. Person B falls flat on his face and does nothing meaningful for the rest of his career, Jim Neidhart.
Facts are facts!

My mother preferred Marty over Shawn back in the day.
Incredible in the ring, he really could have done something with himself had he not succumbed to his vices.
For one thing, it would help to understand him when he talks now.

Person B falls flat on his face and does nothing meaningful for the rest of his career, Jim Neidhart. Facts are facts! Neidhart wasn't exactly given the amount of opportunities that Marty was. For starters, he was put in a meaningful feud with his old partner, something Neidhart didn't get until over 3 years later and even then the focus was on Owen. It also doesn't help that they stuck him on commentary for several months after he split from Bret, and then just as his team was building steam he got fired over the new drug policy (and throwing a monitor at Chief Jay's head). Marty and Neidhart are both very comparable, in that their demons really cost them big. Neidhart was also scheduled to win the tag titles with Owen at WM11, so obviously his team with Owen was "meaningful" enough to win the titles. He was also co-awarded feud of the year in 97, but again I guess that wasn't meaningful either. Marty may have had tag and IC runs, but those were both incredibly forgettable and short. Both should have amounted to more, and both didn't.

Period.

When i watch the old dvds back, Marty really was terrific at one stage, on power with anything Shawn could do but i always felt Shawns timing was better. He reminded me of Ricky Morton, both excellent workers, similar stats. Did Marty have a run in any of the territories? Seems he would have been right at home there.

He was in WCW for a bit in (I think) 98. He was a jobber though,

I thought Marty was the better of the 2 as a kid. Obviously, it didn't work out that way.
What is the story for their Rumble match? Marty was drunk is what I always read I believe. Also heard that Shawn wasn't in much better shape. I haven't watched it in a while, is there anything you pick up on?

Marty is a failure in both his personal and professional life.

I haven't seen it for a while either but all I recall is that Shawn concentrated on Marty's left shoulder for ages, but Marty kept selling the right one as being injured.

I haven't seen it for a while either but all I recall is that Shawn concentrated on Marty's left shoulder for ages, but Marty kept selling the right one as being injured. Both Marty and Shawn went into that match pretty messed up. Marty partied hard the night before and was either still drunk or just obviously hungover by the time the show started. He was fired immediately afterwards. Shawn had a rough night, too. He was drunk and took a nasty spill over a parking lot barrier. If you watch the event, you can see his eye is bruised and swollen from the fall. The whole scenario about Marty selling the wrong shoulder is a little more of a mystery. During the match, Shawn scoops Marty up outside of the ring and slams his right shoulder into the ring post. Marty, however, sold it by grabbing his left shoulder. It could be that Marty simply screwed up and sold the wrong shoulder because of how messed up he was. Another theory is that Marty was actually doing the correct thing and covering up a mishap on Shawn's part. Marty, like most wrestlers/people, is right-handed. I read somewhere that wrestlers are usually trained to work the left side of their opponents body so that they still have full use of their dominant arm during the match.
