I was at WrestleMania last week hanging out in the parking lot before the show with my brother and our friends. I glanced at his shirt and as I read the four words printed on the front of it I felt a great sense of sadness and pity run through my mildly intoxicated body.
I'm Shawn. You're Marty.
Marty Jannetty was such a great in-ring performer. Sure, the guy lacked solid mic skills, but between the ropes he always delivered even after he and Shawn split. It can even be argued that Marty was just as good as HBK, if not maybe even better, at one point during the early 90s. He achieved more after breaking up than a lot of other tag team "rejects" yet his name is always used to reference the bottom of the barrel.
It just seems like people always judge Marty's career in relation to Shawn's which is totally unfair. Shawn is such a rare breed and one of the greatest of all-time.
But Bart Gunn on the other hand...

I agree with you that it is sad, but to be honest, Vince and the WWF/E gave him numerous chances and he kept screwing up because of his drug issues. I mean look at 1992 through 1993 for example - Michaels throws him through the Barber Shop window, he leaves for a while and comes back towards the end of the year when he accidentally hit Sherry with the mirror. He disappears again and comes back to feud with Michaels at the Royal Rumble and then disappears afterwards and then wins the belt in May on Raw.
My point being that if he wasn't so hit-and-miss during those few years, he could have been held in a higher regard than he currently is.

Jannetty definitely messed up his own career there. He was supposed to wrestle HBK at Wrestlemania 8 after the barber shop incident but he went out and got fired.
The Rockers feud could have went all of 92 and 93 to be honest. But Jannetty kept getting messed up and quitting or getting fired, and then replacements had to happen in matches. With guys like Tito Santana and Tatanka.

Marty was his own worst enemy. He had so many chances, even up until fairly recently, but he just couldn't stay clean. He had huge potential.

He absolutely was as good as Shawn in the ring. Although Shawn was able to connect much more with the fans because he was so hateable as a heel, which I think did wonders for him. He was one of those heels you just loved to hate. Marty was a little bit robotic on the mic, which hindered him too. He also made an enemy out of Shawn after the Rockers split so when Shawn managed to wrap Vince around his finger he didn't stand a chance. Then of course you had his behaviour issues. I read in Bret's book that he shut the bus driver out of the bus and went to go and drive off, all the boys were cheering for him but Bret told him that none of them would stick up for him when he got fired again. Even though he let the bus driver in he ended up getting fired a little while later, not doubt in part for the Rockers paralysing that jobber.

my God what a terrible concept.alongside the New Blackjacks and Midnight Express Vinnie was really having a brainfart in 96/97 when it came to teams.

remember the "new" Rockers? my God what a terrible concept. Aside from being ridiculous. The Rockers concept was very 80s, by the time The New Rockers rolled around, it was the mid 90s!

true. and an attempt to turn JR heel, which really went nowhere, and couldn't have served any purpose I can imagine. I think it was Vinces attempt at saying "I own Razor and Diesel and I can get anyone to play the part". yeah, but then they portrayed JR in a heelish-type role at the same time, yelling "How do you like that McMahon!" after he first introduced Fake Razor and went on a spiel about McMahon firing him and stuff. and for a few months afterwards his announcing had a very heel-ish vibe to it.so at least at the beginning there appeared to be some type of plan with making JR a heel that disappeared after a few months.

lol, all that stunt did was get the real Razor and Diesel an extra few million. How so? Bischoff was so worried over the WWF's rumors of Razor and Diesel returning, he was convinced Nash and Hall were going back to the WWF that he offered them longer contracts than the ones they already signed for millions more. I believe apparently they had some kind of out clause in their contracts with WCW that Bischoff was afraid they were going to use.

their contracts had a opt out clause. when they were negotiating with Bischoff they were both VERY wary of WCW and the chance they were taking.......even though Eric had "Sting $$" on the table.so they ahd this put in the paperwork.it tells you how desperate Bischoff was to sign them for this pseudo invasion angle he had in mind.......
when razor and Diesel were advertised for Raw Turner bigwigs went f*cking insane and ordered Bischoff to lock both of them up no matter what it took.........cue them getting an extra 5,00,000 that very day on their existing contracts.and their new ones were even fatter.
yup without even investigating what or who was coming to Raw they forked up HUGE $$.idiots.
Cornettes reaction to Vince telling him he had to teach Bogner how to be Razor Ramon was hilarious on the 97 Timelines shoot.

Shawn Michaels was the one who created the New Rockers thing for Marty. Shawn even said to him, "I thought you would like it" and Marty hated it. Al Snow talks a lot about it in his shoot from 1998 too. How when the new Rockers were starting to get over, the agents would tell them to not do this, or do this instead. It was pretty much HBK fecking with Jannetty's career then.

Exactly, and Marty's character never evolved he was always that 80's Rocker with the mullet, white boots and neon gear. You would think by the mid 90's he would have more of a look similar to the hardy boys or edge or something. It seems like Marty was stuck in 1988.

I am pretty sure Kevin Nash talked about it during a WWE Roundtable discussion on the nWo.

For the longest time I thought Marty was the breakout star of the Rockers.
