These two put on what I feel was a great match. I'm watching it as I type this and I really enjoy it. Their story had so much steam coming to that moment and the work the two put in was real good.
With that being said, I can't help but feel (streak aside) that having Kane lose here was bad booking. I feel that it would have cemented Kane as more of a true monster had he beaten Taker here.
I can't say Kane wasn't made to look strong. I just feel as though having him lose their first encounter after all that build was a bit of a waste.
Just looking for opinions on the topic. How would you have booked it?

I can agree with that. considering they would go one to feud through most of the spring and summer ( bringing in Austin and Mankind as well), it would've made more sense for Taker to be "denied" his revenge at Mania ,and have to chase Kane to get that win.
that said, yeah, the build for this was FU#$ING AWESOME! from the summer of 1997,with Paul Bearer's mentions of Kane being alive, then nothing for a few months, then the surprise appearance at Bad Blood, Taker's refusal to fight Kane, the "death" of the Deadman by fire, then the "resurrection" of a pissed-off Taker who finally had enough and was going to make Kane pay...man,that's when feud-building was an art, man!

I think the booking was sound.......kane cost him the title at Badd Blodd and RR......plus he burned him in the coffin.
IMO it was time for UT to get one back........he was on a hell of a PPV losing streak.
Interestingly Vince had to be pleaded with by JR,Cornette and Prichard to NOT blow this match at DX:IYH.Russo had wanted them to fight straight away but JR & Cornette said "WHOA" it should be dragged out until WM at LEAST before they fight.

I never knew that. Definitely better that they waited it out. For sure.

I remember reading a LONG time ago that the Kane character was only meant to be short term and was originally slated to be gone after the inferno match. I don't know if there is any truth to that as the Kane character caught on and got good reactions from the crowd.
Anyway, their WM 14 match is good. I was surprised with the booking too as Undertaker seemed to go over Kane more times than not period throughout their careers.

I dunno about the character beiong short term but I do know it was Glenn Jacobs absolute last chance in the company.

The feud and buildup was great. The entrances were cool but the match was meh. Got real slow and boring for middle portion of the match.
Kane is a character the wwe has build up as a monster at times only to make him a glorifed jobber for a few months. Don't feel he was ever position to be a major threat.

Kane was an upper tier jobber his entire WWF/E run.I cant remember any major feuds he has won. This. 1997/8 was the only time I saw him as a legit top threat for the title and a monster. After he lost to Taker at WM14, he never got back to the level he did of unstoppable monster. Hell, he was feuding w/ a mid-card HHH by WM15. I think what truly killed him was when he returned in 2002 w/ the stupid half mask. He was more "human" than ever and the massive weight loss made him look normal. He was also doing stupid stuff like a Kanerooni with Booker T and the whole Katie Vick storyline was designed to kill any backstory he had. It was like they were purposely trying to kill him off. Once he lost the mask, that was the final nail in the coffin for him IMO. I've never liked the unmasked Kane.

He was having a really strong run in 2001 (see Royal Rumble that year) and was a big part of the Two Man Power Trip angle along with Taker- even taking the IC title from Triple H. I think he has suffered a bit from what I call "Big Show Syndrome"- hes been turned heel to face back to heel so much that people lose interest. Just look at his most recent run. He was brought back as an unstoppable monster heel and then went into "anger management" in about a 6 month span.

I will say, unmasking him (even though it ruined how he was "burned") made him into a monster again for a while. Sadly, by then, it was kind of beyond fixing. If they want to make Kane be the way he was, they need to have him dominate someone like Ryback or Lesnar. Like, lay them to total waste. Then that'll be the sort of Kane we had back in '98.

Kane is aliiive undertaker , Kane is coming!!
Wow what a rivalry is ll I can say, even non wrestling fans were interested everyone knew about te undertakers brother Kane and for years after people used to say oh yes, Kane is the undertakers real brother.
The story with the undertaker not fighting his brother was a very good idea, I remember bing so scared when Kane kicked him senseless on superstars!!
The match was awesome, much better tan their flop wm 20 match!!

I don't think Kane should have won, he'd destroyed taker at royal rumble & hell in a cell. They way they did it was sound, I mean he took 3 tombstones before he was pinned then took taker out with the chair.
Plus, he won the title at king of the ring, and losing it the next night did more damage than anything IMO.

I recently rewatched this match on the Undertaker 'Streak' DVD and still loved it, 15 years on.
The build was fantastic, the atmosphere of the match itself was great, and the fact that no one at that time had kicked out of the Tombstone cemented to me then and now that Kane was amazing as a monster heel that didn't lose anything by doing the job to the Undertaker at WM.
