Does anyone have a 3-D printer or access to one? I'm curious if 3-D printers are a good solution for making custom heads or parts? You can get a low end one for about $1500 and the prices go way up from there.
I'm not familiar with how they work, but I was thinking that in theory that you might be able to scan a larger Jakks head, shrink it, and print it out smaller for use on a custom mattel. Wonder if the quality is there to even do this? Could you even do it with a matched skin tone, allowing you to only have to paint the hair and eyes? Could also be a great way to make custom belts.
According to a Wall Street Journal article, Mattel is already using them . . .
"Before adopting 3-D printing in 1992, Mattel workers sculpted prototypes of toys from wax and clay before building the production models out of plastic. Today, Mattel engineers use any of 30 3-D printers to create toy parts of virtually every type of toy that it manufactures, including popular brands such as Max Steel, Hot Wheels and Monster High.
But the toymaker draws the line at selling consumers software files that would enable them to print out their own toys on low-cost 3-D printers. A company spokesman said the company could not guarantee toys that consumers printed out would be safe for children, a “topic that the entire toy industry will have to face and embrace” as 3-D printer use broadens at home."
Would love to hear your thoughts or from someone who has used one.

Maybe if you already had one or were on crack people would use it for customs

I had the exact same thought! I heard the Staples in the US will have one for sale in the summer for $1300.

Its very possible to make head sculpts out of these 3-D printers. Ive been keeping up with the technology and following the 3-D printers for awhile now. If people can print out machine guns and pistols from the resin and are fully functioning, then it would be absolutely possible to make various sculpts. The only thing one would have to do would be to paint them to their liking. In a couple years the prices will go down and be more available to the mass consumer the same way home computers and VCRs were. I cant wait to try this out though if I ever came across one!

I can definitely see this becoming common in the future.
It's crazy to think of all of the legal mess that's coming when people become able to print their own merchandise.

People are gonna need to start making 3d templates of all of the mattel body molds.

I can't wait until this technology becomes more cheaper, imagine the custom stages that could be made

I've been on the 3D printer bandwagon for quite sometime now, I've seen some of the things made with one and was blown away!! I assume that with the right templates just about anything can be made. I instantly thought of all the cool things for figures that could be made from accessories to stage parts! It really excites me to see this type of technology that could make anything from a steel cage panel to a new scaled belt plate!

Yeah, I'm on the 3D printing bandwagon too, and I can't wait for it to become cheaper to get one because all the possibilities you could get with one of these... we might be able to get the perfect Dino Bravo action figure!

I remember in the video WWE.com posted a year or two ago about making an Alex Riley Figure that they used a 3d Printer to Make a sculpt of his.

From my design experience, I've had some experience with 3D printing otherwise known as rapid prototyping technology. Its mainly ussed for prototyping because its still quite expensive but it is getting cheaper.
Its not a simple process though, requires a 3d model which either requires a really high tech scanner or you need to 3d model something. Its certainly an exciting prospect. Modellin a head using 3D programs such as CAD would be extremey difficult but making accessories is possible, ive considered doing some myself. Dont know the level of accuracy allows for like belts and such.
