I haven't a clue about all the latest phones, im a simple guy with an old nokia phone from like 2001 but im doing a lot of hiking lately and would love a handy camera phone with me to capture some great pictures while im out and about, whats a really good phone for this purpose? The iphones are expensive but i dont know if i would have much use for it other than the camera lol.

Smart phone is the way to go. Just dont be a sheep and buy into the apple fad. Get anything but an Iphone and you'll be fine. I think just for saying "It's an Iphone" they add 100 dollars onto your monthly bill.

I'm on someone's plan, have an iPhone, and pay 30 bucks. The reason apple is a "fad" is because they make superior products. I've had many different smart phones and this one is my favorite. But it sounds like more technology than you want.

Basically any phone you get that's come out within the past year or so is going to have a great camera. But if you're really only looking to buy a new phone for the camera feature, maybe you should just look into an actual digital camera. There are some out on the market now that are pretty reasonable in price and very small/portable which wouldn't be a hassle to bring along on your hikes. But if you are interested in getting an updated phone, there are a ton out there with pretty similar features. I have a Galaxy S3 at the moment and the camera has great quality. The screen size is definitely one of my favorite aspects about it, some people hate it or love it however. The best thing I could recommend is taking a trip to Best Buy or whatever phone carrier you have now and play around with potential phones.

Went ahead and bought an iphone 3 on eBay for £83. Its used but in mint condition and comes with the cables/charger, i know its one of the older models but it does me and i thought the price was reasonable. Ive got a digital camera but it goes through batteries like theres no tomorrow and i needed an updated phone anyway. Thanks for all the input guys, appreciate it.

An iPhone was probably a smart choice if you like simplicity and want a great camera. I don't know how the cameras were back then, but the 4, 4S and 5 all have fantastic picture quality.
I prefer Android, but the only phone whose camera I consider to be comparable to Apple's is the Samsung Galaxy S4. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it may be slightly better.

Iphone 3 camera was similar to the ipod 4's.

Every Apple product I own (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Macbook) is superior to almost any of its competition. As someone else said, they make superior products, I am not sheep because I like the products. I bought and used a Samsung S3 for two weeks and returned it because I did not like it. People are so ignorant when they act as if Apple is beneath them and what they own. Everyone has their own style and opinions.

There wern't camera's on cell phones in 2001:) I think it started about 03-04! I can't recommend an Iphone enough! I convincedboth my parents an grandmother into one and they love it. With you being into hiking, they offer plenty of nature apps with what plants are safe amor not. Music... The camera on the 5 is best, but the 4s is great too. The big difference between Iphone and Android is most apps on Android are free, as well as downloading music. But, having owned afew Androids, I always go back to Iphone. The Android tends to crash on its apps. As far as battery life, the Iphone can be a pain in the ass. But taken into effect that it constantly searches for the best signal, its more of a plus! Battery life should last around 8-10 hours without constant internet browsing. Iphones are expensive. Seeing that you havent had a new phone in 12 years, I'm sure you have a credit built up with your provider where you can upgrade your phone. You should be able to get the 4s for $100 through AT&T. Yes, its also a fragile phone, but they offer plenty of military/construction grade cases to keep your phone safe. I promise you, you can NOT go wrong with Apple products!

If you tried the alternative products and they werent for you that's fine. Apple is what you liked best. I just hate when people buy an Iphone cause it's what's hip and then they turn around and trash talk everything else with out ever having tried it.

No offense to owning a macbook, but I consider macbooks to be computers for people who don't know how to really use a computer. You can do a hell of a lot more with windows than you can with the apple OS systems; plus WAY more with Linux than either of them. Yeah Microsoft charges a lot for their OS, but they're also mainly a software company it's where they make a bulk of their money. Apple is an electronics company, who happens to just have their own software. The biggest downfall for Macbooks is when they break, unless you're near a major market you almost always HAVE to send it to apple and you're out of a computer for awhile. I see the having people be "mac certified" over just knowing how to fix a computer as an elitist play that a lot of people find really off putting. That all aside, I think iPhones are the best ones on the market. I know people who buy Samsung or windows phones simply because it "isn't an iphone because they wont buy into that". I LOVE the apple store over Android, at least apple doesn't let every junk app through.

But I must say that she has less issues on her Macbook than I do on my Windows PC. I also have a PC that I installed the Linux OS onto and enjoy that just fine. I am near a major market, we have two Apple stores within reasonable driving distance.
