Okay, so apparently you're not allowed to ask questions about phones you're thinking about buying on here, because my last one got locked, so I'll ask in pig latin, so maybe the mods won't know what I'm asking. I'd get a cordless phone. That way you can walk around the house, while still talking on the phone!

I would look at a dumb phone at your age. A smart phone is a fancy toy. Unless you're the one paying for it, you shouldnt have one. Its definitely not a need.
Cant you get an iphone for $200 on contract?

Knock yourself out. The OP isn't doing either. A smart phone is a fancy toy at the end of the day. I have one. I love my toy, but it's still just a toy.

However, I'll be a full-time college student in the fall and I think that warrants a smart phone for obvious reasons. I just wanted to clarify why you think smart phones aren't necessary for teenagers. I do agree that the OP is being a little brat, though.

I just wanted to clarify why you think smart phones aren't necessary for teenagers. I do agree that the OP is being a little brat, though. Because I think a smart phone is a toy at the end of the day. I can't think of anyone who really "needs" a smart phone. Maybe some business people, but then the business pays for the phone, not the person. I have a smart phone. It's a fun toy. It's not a need. I don't think anyone should have an expensive toy (and at $70-100 a month I think a smart phone qualifies as an expensive toy) unless they're paying for it. I don't think a college student needs a smart phone. I don't buy that. Certainly generations of college students went through college without smart phones and were fine. Heck, when I was in college the vast majority of the students didn't even have cell phones. Somehow, despite the barbarity of it all, we managed to survive, learn and retain enough to hold down jobs after we graduated. If you're working and you're paying for your own expensive toys, knock yourself out. I work with a guy who has two corvettes that he's making payments on. Very expensive toys and I'd argue that it's more than a little bit irresponsible to tie up that much money in toys. Still, he works for it and it's his money so as far as I'm concerned he can go to town. Certainly not what I would do, but it's his money. If his parents were paying the payments I'd feel differently. Does that make sense?

A phone needs to text and call. Everything additionally is a luxury and if you want that extra luxury, you pay for it.
If your parents will buy you a phone, they'll buy one that'll do what's it's supposed to and nothing more. If you want to upgrade it to a luxury item, you pay for that yourself.
At this point OP seems like the kind of guy that yells at his parents for not allowing him to milk them out and goes in his room to sit on his bed and pout until they buy an iPhone or something.
You can literally do anything as a job. At one point, I earned some extra money from the neighbourhood by sweeping the roads as I live in a foresty area, a lot of branches and leaves fell onto the road and to prevent accidents I offered to sweep the streets and made an extra 50 bucks a week.

I have my own email for my school that I may need to access at any given moment, I have to do homework online, and I also have it connected to a printer on campus. I think those things alone are valid reasons why a college student would need a smart phone TODAY. I understand older folks who went through college went through it without cell phones, computers, internet, etc., but we're living in the year 2013 now and school as evolved with technology. The reasons I listed are probably just the tip of the iceberg. Hell, I have an app for Mizzou on my phone that is apparently REALLY helpful that I haven't even dove into yet.

I went to college just ten years ago. I had campus email. I got assignments via email and had to turn them in via email as well. At the time I had no Internet at home. Most people didn't. We went to the computer lab (open 0700-2200 or so) and did our work there. Does a smart phone make all this more convenient? Absolutely. Is it necessary? No, it's not. Let's be honest here. If there was no way in the world for you to have a smart phone can you honestly say that you wouldn't be able to complete your studies at all?

If there was no way in the world for you to have a smart phone can you honestly say that you wouldn't be able to complete your studies at all? Most people didn't have internet at home 10 years ago? I'm fairly certain that more than 75% of the people on this forum most definitely did. Most schools are embracing technology more than ever. Hell, you can even get a degree 100% ONLINE. I heard a radio ad the other day for a private high school in my area that loans out iPads to their students for assignments, emails, tests, etc. It's definitely an integral part of school in today's day and age. Is a smart phone absolutely necessary? No. But why argue with someone else's opinion on whether or not they need it?

Galaxy S4. Don't know if Best Buy is still running it, but you get a free $50 gift card with the purchase.....and you can use it towards the phone. I was due for an upgrade so I got it for 149.
