Professional Wrestling became scripted after it's most dominant legitimate champion, Ed "Strangler" Lewis became a promoter & listened to what is still considered one of Wrestling's most hauntingly poignant turns of phrase as Tootz Mondt utter the words "The common man will never appreciate the beauty of scientific wrestling."
Thus leading to the duo along with Billy Sanoiw to practically "invent" the modern format for a wrestling show. They introduced time limits, card line ups, & invented many crowd pleasing moves that have become introductional moves for developmental recruits.
There are few shoot matches in the modern world, with the exception of the Pancrase promotion & various similiar companies in Japan. Some would argue No-GI Jiu-Jitsu is a modern incarnation of catch as catch wrestling, but without pinfalls. However, Freestyle Wrestling is more closely related as pinning is of course the textbook means of victory.
But what do you mean by legitimate?
Few men believe in the beauty of authentic wrestling or posesses the unbridled passion for, & draw inspiration from the Gas-Light era's elite more adamantly than I do.
However I certainly can't think of anyone foolish enough to Argue that Kurt Angle & Brock Lesnar's rivalry of 2003 wasn't filled with legitimately technical chain wrestling & complex submission strategies which were wildly taxing to them & entertaining to countless members of the genre's audience.
One must remember that part of the beauty of Professional Wrestling is the unknown gift Strangler gave us. He may have been trying to make a living, but he also worked hard to tell great stories with the wrestling techniques of his talent/roster, as well as his own personal in-ring encounters more often than not.
The successor generations have been able to further the creation of this beatiful artform that combines the oldest cultural glues of sport, & theatre into one social super-adhesive that posesses the capabilities to bring our entire planet closer if we can raise our comprehension.
So whether the two men are in a physical chess match, or risking life & limb like NO thespians & poets & playwrights before them in the attempt to the story of one.
I will never argue that wrestling at it's purist forms is anything short. Of legitimate.
