I was just wondering if pro wrestling has ever been non scripted, has it ever actually been a legitimate sport where 2 guys try to pin or submit each other in the ring. Obviously amateur wrestling is legit but I was just curious to where the concept of pro wrestling came from, and did audiences know it was scripted when it first started out?

I remember not too long ago William Regal posted a video on twitter of this match. It was like nothing ive ever seen, it was either in the UK or Japan, but it was almost a hybrid of Pro and College Wrestling. It was all technical work, and I believe a point system was involved. Also alot of breaks by the ref. It looked really really legit. Not sure what its called though.

It really was awesome I sat and watched the entire thing with my jaw dropped. It was intense. But sadly I don't remember the YT link or the guys names. I was hoping soemone would see my comment and post it lol.
If anything I may have to go fishing through Regals twitter. But he posted it like a few months back.

It was all real until Triple H had sex with Katie Vick's corpse. After that, it became scripted.

Remember when every one thought that this was legit? NOBODY thought that was legit.. all I heard was it was a nice punch. Just because you make a punch look painful doesn't mean it hurt him to bad..

up until about the 1930's/1940's or so,yes,it was. some of the wrestlers were talking about how they would get hurt, and not be able to wrestle, and therefore not make any money. so they made a decision, would it be better to keep beating, stretching, and throwing the holy hell out of each other on a nightly basis, and risk serious injuries, costing them money, ranking spots, and extended absences from the ring? or would it be better to give the appearance they were still doing all the bone-breaking,muscle-tearing stuff that they were doing before, while helping to protect each other, and their ability to continue to wrestle, and therefore continue to make money, while the crowd was none the wiser that the guys in the ring were working together, rather than against each other?
we all know what decision they made, which allowed them to continue wrestling for a long time, and this "new" concept of pro wrestling eventually made it's way through all the different promotions and wrestler training.

World of Sport was the British style of professional wresltling that was hugely popular before WWF gained exposure here. Names like Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Kendo Nagasaki were household names. It always looked more "real" and involved much more improvisation, however the outcomes were scripted. Regal came very much from this school of wrestling, which is why his mat wrestling is pretty much perfect.
Pro wrestling as a scripted activity to my knowledge began as sideshows and carnival attractions.
