From Fight Network... fightnetwork.com/news/40568:aug.-15-edition-of-pollock-greenfield/Former WWE head writer Alex Greenfield (05-06) recently did a podcast discussing his time w/ the WWE. Pretty interesting and I thought I'd share here since its classic stuff. If you don't wanna listen this is a quick gist about it... - In 2005 the writers felt Christian was over big and thought he was in line for a push towards the World Heavyweight Championship. When brought up to Vince however he was totally against it because he felt Christian's face looked too "ratty." Alex claims he was stunned when Vince thought they should try a new gimmick w/ Christian by putting a blue dot over his face during matches. He also says Vince hated when he gave promos. The interviewer also brings up how Christian looked defeated during his last few weeks in the WWE before moving to TNA. - HBK and Hogan both insisted they should win on the day of SummerSlam 2005. Vince held a closed door meeting w/ em and the decision was made for Hogan to win. Greenfield admits that he was not a fan of HBK because he acted like an entitled a** but understands why some felt Shawn, the full-timer should win the match. He felt Shawn acted unprofessionally by overselling throughout the entire match. - During an angle involving HBK and Kurt Angle it was designed to favor Kurt. HBK aparently didn't like this and began overselling during their segment. After the segment HBK confronted Kurt backstage about taking "liberties" and Kurt aparently threw him around like a rag-doll. - Nobody likes Kevin Dunn but Vince. He thinks Dunn will be the first to be fired once HHH and Steph take over. - He loved working w/ Eddie, Rey, and JBL because they were creative and easy to work with. Also enjoyed working w/ Tirsh and Mickie. - Says David Hart Smith has improved a ton since his WWE days. - He likes Cena's personality but hates what has happened to his character. I thought it was pretty interesting stuff. We all heard the rumors about Vince hating Christian and I guess this confirms it. For me it also confirms why some guys who have been over big at times never got a push to go with it. Populatiry w/ the fans doesn't matter. Only what Vince thinks of you does. Also not surprised by the HBK comments. I never believed the "born again christian" BS and he always decided to oversell and make a joke of his oponents when he didn't get his way. He can't blame all of his wrondoings on pill back in the day because it simply comes down to who you are and I don't believe he changed like the WWE wants us to.

Say what you want about Kevin Dunn but his video packages are second to none. I remember reading that Christian vs John Cena was the original main event for Vengeance 2005 but Jericho got added to the match because Mr McMahon didn't think he was a big enough draw on his own.

So it wouldn't matter if Christian 'couldn't draw' like Vince believed, the match wouldn't have been the main event anyhow.

The 'pale blue dot' of Charisma.
His gimmick should be taping his matches from Jupiter, camera aimed at Earth. I refuse to believe Vince was completely serious about that though, if not then it's just sad, Christian is just the ultimate ass, with the cheesed up expressions, especially circa 05. Edge is no less freaky, possibly even more.

When brought up to Vince however he was totally against it because he felt Christian's face looked too "ratty." Alex claims he was stunned when Vince thought they should try a new gimmick w/ Christian by putting a blue dot over his face during matches. They should still do that. Cover up his little old-man rat-face. It'd be the most interesting Christian's been in years. I sure hope so. That guy was the worst. I remember reading that Christian vs John Cena was the original main event for Vengeance 2005 but Jericho got added to the match because Mr McMahon didn't think he was a big enough draw on his own. According to Jericho in an interview after he left in 2005, the reason it was made a triple threat was because Christian had been getting babyface reactions in his anti-Cena promos and they didn't want the crowd on his side in a singles match.

My question is if Vince felt Christian's face looked "ratty," what did he think of Edge's face? He wasn't exactly the best looking guy around. Or what about HHH's bloated, double-chin face from 02-03? Vince really is psycho.

Kind of reminds me how Mr. Burns kept harping on Don Mattingly to trim his sideburns. When a billionaire owner finds something wrong, no matter how wrong or strange in his opinion he is, you aren't going to change his mind.

I can see why HBK wanted the win over Hogan but Kurt definitely needed to go over in that feud.

Maybe it's because both Edge and Trips had long hair to distract, and somewhat cover, their ugly mugs, whereas Christian (at the time) was fresh off a new short haircut? Honestly I have no idea because none of those three are aesthetically pleasing in the facial area.

For those who doesn't listen to this podcast every week, I suggest you do. Normally, its John Pollock and Court Bauer. Alex Greenfield filled in and revealed tons of behind the scenes info about the WWE during his tenure. I wasn't too surprised that Shawn Michaels caught a fit when he lost to Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 21. Given Michaels' past, that isn't too shocking.
As for the stuff with Christian, I am quite surprised Vince McMahon wasn't a fan of his look. In retrospect, the WWE missed the ball with Christian in 2005. He was so over and had a ton of charisma. I guess McMahon felt the Christian was the Marty Jannetty of Edge & Christian.
While not mentioned on the podcast cordless2016 linked to, but Court Bauer mentioned that Vince McMahon was a fan when Paul Heyman did commentary in 2001.

According to Jericho in an interview after he left in 2005, the reason it was made a triple threat was because Christian had been getting babyface reactions in his anti-Cena promos and they didn't want the crowd on his side in a singles match. Yes you're right. I remember there was a specific reason Jericho was added to the match but couldn't remember exactly what.

Yes you're right. I remember there was a specific reason Jericho was added to the match but couldn't remember exactly what. I also remember Jericho saying that he was suppose to feud w/ Carlito before leaving in 2005 but requested a feud to w/ to help get him over. In retrospect it backfired in a few ways... 1) It was the beginning of the fans turning against Cena's "Superman" gimmick. Christian had already begun getting fans to cheer him over Cena and Jericho accelerated it. Jericho dominated Cena in promos and in the ring and even then fans hated Cena's "Superman/ 12 year old joke spewing" gimmick. The fans were totally against Cena after he feuding w/ Jericho. 2) Christian's momentum was completely killed. Jericho was leaving soon while Christian was remaining a full-timer. Instead of giving the feud to Christian who deserved it it went to the guy who was leaving. This in turn not only killed Christian's momentum but caused him to refuse to resign w/ the WWE and instead jump to TNA. By November the WWE had lost both Jericho and Christian while the fans were totally against Cena.

So because Hogan had said to Michaels that he would put him over in the rematch, then fall back on that and make a stupid excuse at the last moment HBK's in the wrong? It was highly unprofessional of Michaels but it was still Hogan to blame

Somewhat inappropriate audio but yeah, I sincerely doubt that's how he was taught to sell in that match.

I don't think Greenfield or myself said Hogan was innocent. Hes arguably the biggest politician ever behind the scenes. I think both were defiantly in the wrong. Both guys pulled their typical BS and when Hogan got his way over the finish HBK pulled his BS by overselling and making the match a joke. Considering HBK is suppose to be a born again Christian its contradicting that hed do something like that. But Hogan is at fault as well.
