I went to a book store earlier today and found Lex Luger's new book. I grew up watching Lex and wanted to hear what he had to say about his career in his own words. So I went to a bar and started reading. I ended up finishing the whole book in a few hours.
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
I figured I'd get through a few chapters and save the rest for another day, but it was intriguing and I couldn't put it down. Here's a few interesting things I found out while reading through it:
- Lex originally attended Penn State, but after injuring his knee he transferred to the University of Miami. He was kicked off the football team there after he and some teammates destroyed a hotel room in Atlanta.
- Hiro Matsuda personally trained Lex inside of his garment factory in Tampa. His "final exam" included doing one thousand hindu squats.
- Admits that he was a total jerk the first time he ever met Sting. Sting walked up to Lex in the dressing room and asked him how he kept up his physique being on the road so much. Lex didn't even look at him he just said "Stoli's and peanut M&M's" and brushed him off.
- Luger was a pioneer when it came to pro wrestlers and guaranteed contracts. He turned down an offer from Jim Crockett that offered no guaranteed money and ended up signing a deal that was worth in excess of $1 million over three years.
- He admits that Bret Hart got him hooked on something that he's still addicted to to this day... coffee.
- Lex says that he was steroid-free the entire time he was with the WWF.
- During the "Bodyslam Challenge" on the Intrepid, Lex was worried he wouldn't be able to slam Yokozuna because the cowboy boots he was wearing made it difficult to gain his footing inside the ring.
- Putting many rumors to rest, Lex clearly says that there were no promises made to him about becoming world champion in the WWF. Vince simply told him that IF he did decide to put the belt on him it would either be at SummerSlam or at WrestleMania X.
- By the time Lex left the WWF for WCW in September of 1995, he had been working without a contract for over six months. Lex wanted to pursue a few fitness endeavors outside the WWF, but Vince was lukewarm on the idea and stalled any further contract negotiations.
- During his shocking appearance on the inaugural Nitro, Lex was standing face-to-face in the ring with Hogan. The show went to commercial break and Lex started smiling. Hogan got legit mad at him for breaking character and said, "Wipe that grin off your face, or I'll knock it off. You're stealing money from me and my family right now."
- Lex beating Hogan on Nitro for the WCW title was actually Hulk's idea.
There's a lot more, but those are just some of the ones I remember off the top of my head. Again, it was an excellent read. For a while there, Lex's career looked like it was destined for the "triumph and tragedy" files. However, he found God, made a miraculous recovery, and seems to be enjoying life more than he ever has.
Nice to read a wrestling book with little bitterness and a happy ending.
Any questions about the book, just ask.
