Any fans here?
The band themselves have kinda been known for their punk sound, and even delving into the pop-punk stuff at points, but that latest album (I know its been out for a while) is so damn hard, "The Path" especially is a track you'd expect to come straight from a pure hardcore band. Such a good album though, not to say their older stuff ain't great, but this album may have breathed life into this band and started them off on to a totally new road musically.

First off, my favorite band ha. I love the new album. It took balls to change up their sound this far into their careers but it paid off. May not be for everyone, but it flows nicely and works as a hard album. Seeing them live next month and I can't ing wait.

I've been a huge fan of Senses Fail for eight years or so now. I'm not into much "heavy" stuff anymore, but Senses Fail is still among my favorites. I'm a sucker for Buddy's writing, I've always found that he can tell an incredible story, and so substance always supersedes the style when it comes to them. Renecer took me a while to get used to. It's a massive change for them, but I grew to love it. Still Searching is still my favorite record of theirs, though.
In terms of heavy stuff I've gotten into this year, it does take a backseat to Letlive.'s "The Blackest Beautiful", though.

Thing is I've not heard anything much about letlive.'s new album, and anything that I have its been about how bad it is :/ I mean different strokes and all that, if you like it then great haha, but all I've heard it that its not great, maybe its not great compared to their other stuff? But yeah, the new album from SF is totally a change in sound, but I think they pulled it off real well. If we're going favourite SF, I'd have to say this album is really up there for me, apart from that a good few singles from their back catalogue, but really, it was this album that got me back into loving these guys.

I've heard mostly consistent praise for "The Blackest Beautiful", it's actually what got me to check them out in the first place. They only really have two records that they count (and a couple of EPs, I believe), but I find that it's on par with their last album, "Fake History". The one problem that people seem to have with it, consistently (and I agree) is the sound quality. They went for a very raw and live sound, which works well for some bands (new Jimmy Eat World, for example), but Letlive. has so many components that it comes off as a bit muddy and underproduced. It's something I've gotten used to, but I wouldn't mind if the record was a bit cleaner. As far as Senses Fail goes, to me, with Renecer, the thing I like most is the fact that even though they went for a distinctly heavier sound bordering along the lines of hardcore, Buddy still chose to keep the band's very melodic style during the choruses, which is one of the things about them I've always loved.

While I love Senses Fail to pieces and respect Renacer, it isn't something I thoroughly enjoy. I understand they wanted to break away from their usual sounds and dig deeper to produce something different, and they nailed what they were going for, but it just didn't resonate with me for whatever reason. I'm weird though and sometimes it takes a while for albums to grow on me, so we'll see where I stand in the future. I saw them back in like, March, and they were phenomenal, but they did a LOT of new stuff. Buddy said at one point that he's not about negativity anymore and didn't want to harp on playing older material, and it kind of broke my heart a little.

Yea that's what I heard, for the first time he had nothing to complain about so he went with what was natural I guess, which ended up being this close to-hardcore sound. Tbh though, if you listen to their very early stuff (I'm talking first EP and stuff), there's clear hints there of hardcore sonics and stuff.

Oh they've definitely always had a taste for hardcore, and I think a desire to dive into it a little bit.
To bring back fattic's point about Buddy's comments, I heard the same, and it is a little disappointing. While I certainly think it's great that Buddy is happy and doing well, I do find that his more aggressive, angry writing is more raw, real, thought-provoking and emotional. Lyrics are a huge part of a band's appeal to me, and I do find there are a few spots on Renecer where Buddy slips into cliche.

Lyrics in general are a huge deal to me, regardless of what band it is. If I can't connect on some level it just doesn't really work. Senses Fail's lyrics have always struck a chord somewhere inside, with their anger and darkness being a way for me to kind of let off some steam, so to speak. I feel as though Renacer focuses more on positivity and moving forward, which is understandable given the road Buddy has been down. I get that he has a girlfriend now and he's in love and everything, but I feel like a lot of the songs about him being in love (Mi Amor/Glass/Ancient Tombs/ Frost Flower/Snake Bite) get to be, as you said, a little cliche, not to mention tiring. With that being said, I'd have to say my favorite tracks from the CD are Renacer, The Path, and Between The Mountains And The Sea. I can't say enough how much I love them coming full circle with the whole looking in the mirror thing from the first and last track ("When you look in the mirror/Are you proud of what you see?/When you look in the mirror/Are you the person you thought you'd be?") ("And do you ever ask yourself /If the person that you are/Is the person you were meant to be/Or are you too afraid to go that far").
