It's a pretty common occurrence to hear someone, more often that not a female, complain that they are sick and tired of drama. Almost always, it's completely disingenuous, as people who want to avoid drama and "don't want to talk about it" typically wouldn't make a vague statement about it online, simply so people can pay attention to them and ask if they're okay. And typically they get just the outpouring of attention they were looking for when they made their false claim of wanting to be away from drama.
Thunder's claim about wanting to stay away from drama didn't fall into that category. It wasn't even a statement that he made to anyone but himself. As it was genuine, he wasn't looking to make it a cry for help or attention. It was just a promise he was making to himself, as he was getting caught up in way too much nonsense for his liking.
Dealing with Malakai had been far too difficult for his liking. At some point in his life, Thunder thought he could have laid claim to the most stubborn person in the Western Hemisphere. But, as he found out, he couldn't hold a candle to Malakai. Granted, you couldn't really fault someone for being negative when their body was riddled with cancer. Still, this was not exactly the situation he would have expected to be difficult.
His objective had been pretty simple and straightforward. All he had tried to do was convince Malakai to go visit some kids with cancer and talk to them. For Thunder, it was obvious. On the surface, it would be be a great thing for those kids. But he also knew that it would be beneficial for Malakai as well. It was clear that he had lost all hope quite a while ago. That didn't mean it always had to stay that way. Seeing the kids could have been in a pivotal change for him, to start thinking more positively and maybe explore other options.
This wasn't easy to accomplish, but eventually he had managed to talk him into it. By the end, it was a draining experience that had been nearly a constant battle. After that, he didn't want to deal with any drama or the annoyance of other people.
It wasn't the end of it for him, though. Robin was ready to step in and fill his sudden void of drama. Her evening had suddenly opened up, as her date for the evening had stood her up, a fact she had not know until he didn't show up at the restaurant. Now she had made the desperate plea for her wonderful brother to join her since she didn't want to look completely embarrassed. And, of course, the other reason was she was now very upset and needed someone to talk/vent to. That was gonna be real fun, but since he was asked and since it was his sister, it was something that had to be done.
And then as he was getting ready to leave, the third bit of potential drama hit him, in the form of a phone call. Looking down at his phone, he saw that it was Ace Bennett calling. With all that he had been through with Bennett in the past several weeks, he knew this would not be a good conversation under any circumstances. His motives and were on his mind was a completely mystery to Thunder. It wasn't something that he wanted to deal with, though, especially not now. Functioning with him as a team in the upcoming show was something he could handle. He had dealt with worse situations before, and he could get through it for now.
All that being said, he still had enough curiosity to lifted to the voicemail.
"Hey, it's Ace. I know this is weird that I have your number and everything and quite frankly I don't expect you to call me back, but I figured this was worth a shot. The numbers on your phone now where you can reach me if you do end up wanting to talk. I've been meaning to have a sort of one on one with you anyways sometime in the future so-"
Well, that didn't help at all. Voicemails weren't typically the place to leave long drawn out thoughts, and Ace had succumbed to that. If he really wanted to, he could have called back and gotten the scoop. But that was not what he wanted to deal with.
Some time later, on the way to the restaurant, his phone was buzzing again. Typically, he wouldn't have bothered while driving, but in this case he didn't know if it was Robin. Instead, it was his favorite tag partner again. At this point it was starting to seem odd that Ace was so determined to get a hold of him. Again, he resisted, but still checked the message.
"Hey, it's me again. I know this is probably really off putting to you but I really need to talk to you or at least for you to hear me. I've done a lot of wrong things in my life and have done bad things to a lot of people who really didn't deserve it. After that match where I kinda got you fired, I felt happy to have gotten you out of the way. But-"
Apparently Ace had not managed to get through his novel once again. At least this time his intentions were a lot more obvious. It appeared that he had perhaps done some soul searching and had seen the error of his ways. Great, that was a step in the right direction, if that's what was really happening. But that was not what Thunder needed right now. He didn't need any of this. It was all a little too much. So he continued to do the only thing that seemed appropriate, he moved on once again.
The dinner with Robin started predictably. She ranted and raved about how terrible all men were and how they were all the same. He nodded and agreed in the right places, all the while wondering how they could have overdone his steak so badly. After what seemed like an eternity, she wore out the subject and turned her attention to something he could sink his teeth into more--his career.
"I'm glad I didn't end up going to the show with you this week, and went last time instead," Robin said. "I don't really need to be around for round 90 in the never ending issue with you two. And I don't like the idea of him being around with how delusional he seems to be about me, and just in general."
"Oh, I assure you, I'm more annoyed with it than you are. Quite frankly, it kind of disgusts me. You like to go through life thinking that people are genuinely good, and then there's people like him that ruin the whole thing. I've kept quiet about it publicly, but it really pisses me off that his untalented ass is hanging around again. As much as the two of us despise each other, we had an agreement when we headed into that retirement match at Superbrawl that the loser would retire for good. No surprise, he gave me everything he had and he still lost.
"But he just had to come back, and we waited until I was gone to do so. And then I quickly discover in the meantime that he's completely gone off his rocker. Well, more so than before. He just seems to be a complete wreck from top to bottom. He's slipping more and more and more, and I don't think there's anything that can be done to change that. Once you start imagining a fake relationship with someone, you're kind of off the deep end. It would be sad if he wasn't such a scumbag."
"Jeez, you weren't kidding about being mad about this," Robin said.
"What do you expect? You try dealing with the same guy being a thorn in your side for the better part of a decade. I'm sick of it. Dealing with him and beating him has gotten boring over the years. But I guess I have no choice but to do it again. It's not like this time will be hard or anything. Hell, it might even be easier than usual. He doesn't even have the benefit of a good partner to carry him most of the way. Since Trace is all up on his tired "I'm the evil boss and I can do whatever I want routine" he stuck him with some rookie. It's going to be the blind leading the blind in there, with perhaps an ounce or two of talent total between them."
"But are you gonna be okay with Ace as partner?" she asked.
"We'll see. He's blowing up my phone all day, wanting to talking to me badly about something. I don't--" The phone was buzzing again. "Oh jeez, it's him again."
"Answer it."
"I'm not not diving into this crap right now. It's too much to deal with. We'll handle ourselves fine in the ring."
"Well at least play the message," she said. "And out it on speakerphone so I can hear.
He did just that.
"Look, I know we don't exactly have the most friendly of pasts, but we don't really have much choice but to work together, am I right? And I hope I sound genuine here, but I really and truly want to apologize for anything I did in my last run here. I wasn't myself. I hope we can work together and pull out the win. I'll see you there."
"Having trouble with your boyfriend?" some smartass restaurant patron chimed in with has they walked by. Thunder resisted the urge to gouge his eyes out.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
"You shouldn't be avoiding him if he feels this way," she said.
"This is not a relationship here, jeez," he said. "This is not something I am going to delve into right now. If he's genuine, that's great. There should be no problems in our match then. All I want is to win and work well enough together, which he seems to want to do as well. That's all that I need, and no more than that. And you know what that means?"
"What?"
"Yukio will surely get his ass kicked."
"Sounds good to me."
