The recent Goldberg topic made me start thinking about another storyline that made little sense.
In 1996 we had Hogan and the nWo as the hottest things in the wrestling world. They dominated WCW and couldn't be stopped. Then Piper comes in. Bringing in Piper was a good move on WCW's part because it brought back nostalgic memories for old school fans and WCW could feed him to Hogan w/out sacrificing one of their top faces to stand up to the nWo later on. Instead, we got Piper going over Hogan at the biggest PPV of the year. The hottest heel in the world lost cleanly to another guy who was far past his prime and even had had a hip replacement by 1996. And to make matters worse, it was a non-title match. The biggest PPV of the year for WCW featured the world champ in a non-title fight. The problem though was that this was never advertised. For weeks during the buildup we were led to believe that it was a title fight. When Piper actually won the match the fans erupted. It was an unbelievable WTF moment.....until we realized that he didn't win the title. And to make things even more confusing was that the contract they supposedly signed was storyline written up by Piper's lawyers. Not only did Piper not win the title, but he was made to look like an idiot as well for writing the contract.
I was 6 at the time of the airing so I didn't notice this much but going back and watching this storyline its another example of how backwards WCW was at the time. Hogan looks good by doing a clean job (to a guy as old as him) while also keeping the world title. More backstage pull on his part.
Just wondering what others feel about this storyline and did you guys notice when this was happening live?
