Anyone else see this film and love it?. I don't like Johnny Depp at all (except in Pirates, although that's probably more to do with him being given roles that don't suit him Tim Burton movies all the time), but he was actually very good in this film and had great chemistry with Armie.
There's quite a bit of controversy over film critics reviewing the film 7-8 months before it released, negatively which hurt the film's performance quite a lot. Sucks, because I would have loved a sequel.

I heard it bombed pretty badly, but that's never bothered me about movies. I'll probably check it out once it's on dvd

I thought it was great, honestly. I'm not sure why the critics dumped all over it, but I can definitely say that it turned people off before it was even released. It was a tad bit too long, so it could have benefitted from a little better editing, but the story is fantastic. It setup perfectly for more films too. Sadly, we'll never see the franchise get another try but I thought it was entertaining as hell.

I had fun with it, I enjoyed it.
It was a little on the long side, but that didn't hurt my opinion of it.

-- Seen 1 preview for it, was excited to see it - then seen Tonto was being played by Depp, turned me off instantly!
Depp's over-rated in the first place, and secondly, I thought we were past the whole "white guy playing an indian" thing and left that BS in the 20th century. That role could've gone to a fellow native actor and "made" him. But thanks to the entertainment industry, my race (again), is still at the very bottom of the totem pole, sorta speak.

I normally don't like Depp either, but he was actually VERY good in this film. Depp also has Native American ancestry. They cast a relatively unknown Lone Ranger so casting Depp IMO was a good move to get a big star behind it.

Thought it was a little too long. And I'm not the one who minds long movies.

And there are plenty of great native actors and actresses, who could've knocked that role out of the park! My complaint, is that Hollywood (much like they did with a lot of films and TV shows of the 20th century), still has to cast a white guy to play a native. Thus, robbing the opportunity of making a star out of one of those GENUINE native entertainers. They could have gotten a well known actor to play Lone Ranger, and a virtual unknown to play Tonto - so long as that unknown was an actual native actor. See what I'm saying? It's a lot like what Mooney said on Chappelle's show at one time: "Tom Cruise as 'The Last Samurai' or Brad Pitt as 'The Mexican'; How about 'The Last Ni**a on Earth' starring Tom Hanks!". And Depp is still over-rated.

seriously, the only reason depp played tonto is because he worked with gore verbinski on pirates and they wanted to keep the magic going from that relationship
it wasn't hollywood intentionally screwing natives over, and the examples you cite don't really make your point..
besides, they used natives for those scenes, such as saginaw grant (who I met at a red carpet event)

I haven't seen it. But I heard it bombed big time. Anyway people told me it should have been called Tonto and The Lone Ranger because The Lone Ranger took a backseat Yes this is true. I saw the film when it first came out. It was horrible. The Lone Ranger is shown as a big WIMP for 99% of the movie. Usually I can understand that the film is trying to build up the hero so that when he finally does assume the role as the hero it's more meaningfull. Sadly though the Lone Ranger drags on and on. Time after time we see the Lone Ranger fail to become the hero we all paid to see. The bad guy kills his brother, tried to kill him, and then proceeds to eating the brother. Wouldnt this be cause enough for you to DEMAND vengeance? Not in the Lone Ranger, the Ranger is fine with those crimes and feels the courts are his best option. And that just goes on and on. And then I was surprised. Lone Ranger is a Disney film but it has lots of racist remarks and situations. So this movie was very iffy. I wouldnt take my kids to see it cause I dont want to explain why the white man is different from Tonto..... or as they call them in the movie.... savages. And at the same time the movie failed to entertain me because it drags on FOREVER before we finally get some good action scenes. And even then, it's Disney, so no one dies.

As a kid I would go to Six Flags which had Bugs Bunny, not Mickie mouse. So growing up I thought Bugs was the much better cartoon. I've also thought it's disgusting to try and make something as nasty as a rat into a loveable childrens cartoon.

I heard not long after it came out that it sucked. However that doesn't mean I wouldn't watch it.

Im sure that if I were to go and watch old Looney Tunes cartoons there wouold be things that can be viewed as racist. Only as a kid I either didnt catch them or didnt understand? In the Lone Ranger though there are scenes where the characters say things like you white men destroy, or you savages arent civilized. None of it is masked, it just comes right at you and calls you white or a savage. I just didnt care for it. Either be a kid friendly film by not showing deaths, as is the case in this movie. Keep it nice and friendly/goofy. Have a positive message. OR aim the movie at adults. Show deaths, be racist, be a dark movie. This movie falls inbetween. It isnt very action packed so as an adult I lose interest. And I thought it was pretty racist so I wouldnt call it a kids film. I guess if in your home racism isnt an issue, or you are racist then it could be a kids film? I didnt care for the film. Of all the films I saw in the theater this year I would say Lone Ranger was my least fav so far.
