So I went to KMart last night on the way to a friends house and decided to check out the scene. No figs needed but was surprised to see the Best of MidSouth DVD was out so i picked it up. Got to the register and was told a had 3 bucks in rewards points to redeem so got a little bit off my DVD set. They also printed me off a dozen coupons (if you shop at Kmart you know what I mean) and for the first time one of them was useful to me. $3 off toys! But of course theses things expire in a week so the heat was on to find something at Kmart. Well I ended up going to a store that was not near my house to check out there supply and they had E24 Miz so i used the coupon there but I also saw the Tribute to the Troops ring. I had heard back in the summer KMart put these on clearance but I never saw one.
Now for those of you that know me know that I am the biggest supporter of the Jakks RSR and view all other rings as inferior. But I do make ring skirts and canvases and stuff for people and have not been able to do so for the Mattel basic ring since I did not have one to fit stuff to. I just couldn't justify paying $20 for a ring that i didn't want or like to use as a model. Well it turned out this store had it on sale for $2.20!!! For $2.20 I could justify picking it up and using it for a classic mini display. The box was cut apart and in sad shape but I figured for that price i could give it a whirl. It did have missing parts but just the, flag, military vest and helmet. WHich I could live without. Everything else was there. I was surprised to see that the ropes are some how permanently attached to one ring post. Which is a bummer for customizing purposes for those who like to change out the ropes like me. The construction seems solid. I quite like the spring function and it works so much better than I remember the first Jakks Stunt action rings working. These springs are just powerful enough to not give to your figs being posed but have enough give to bounce back from a slam. I was surprised to see that they cheeped out on the decals. They had the decal sheet with the set of course but only came with 2 ring skirt stickers for 2 panels. This doesn't matter much to me as I plan to keep the ring clean and "classic" but If I was a kid using this as my main ring I would be POed that they cheeped out on a couple stickers. AS I said the ring is solid and I have no complaints with the construction aside form the ropes on the one post. My only gripe is size. The under taker is as tall as the ring. and when he lays down the Macho Man is left looking for space to work. I challenge someone to try to play out a 16 man Battle Royal in this thing. I am pretty sure if you were to have even an ounce of success with that you would have to implement a no Bundy/Andre/Yoko rule. And lets be honest. What fun is that? But that is how these little rings roll. For the price I am thrilled and happy to have a model to use to make Mattel Basic ring ringskirts and canvases.
KMart Exclusive Back Stage Play Set.
Um I love me some play set. Advertised as compatible with the entrance stage it really lacks instructions as to how they planned for it to be use together. But you can pretty much figure it out. They give you a nice little ramp to put on the back of your stage. The cloth curtain is a nice touch but the cardboard backing on this panel and in the GM room is disappointing. Yes i get costs and all that but the least they could do (keeping in mind how expensive this was)was to give us some good stiff cardboard like Jakks did in the old Prop Box sets. These things are just too flimsy for me. The prop boxes are nice and you get 2 different sized ones with removable lids. They have little casters on the bottom that work quite well. I gave a few figures some fun rides on these things. I love the hard plastic walls and that they are made to be some what interchangeable. The first one I have is the wall with the removable fire extinguisher and water fountain. THe fire extinguisher is well done and puts Jakks crappy one to shame. I like the water fountain but was disappointed to find that mine was missing the little spout. It has a spot for it but no spout. I looked all through the box and packing materials but no spout. The next panel is the locker gimmick. Works great. Has a nice bench with breaking action. The next panel has the cargo door which opens. There is a great chain on the side that does not really control the door but is a nice touch. The last panel is the GM door. Love the working door. Inside is the flimsy wall diorama. Comes with a lamp that breaks into 4 pieces, and breakable end table. The couch is also well done. It is solid plastic but has a texture that makes it almost feel like fabric. It's hard to explain but I appreciate that little touch. And it some how works so well that it stays together quite well but breaks with just enough force. Add this to my Jakks back stage play set and prop boxes and I am going to have to get a bigger house to set up this arena.
