So I'm in Canada and we're lucky if we get anything at all from Mattel but I was in Wal*Mart the other day and came across the basic wave that has Rosa Mendes. Anyways, I see a silver-version of Zack Ryder (from that wave) and I'm thinking, "what the hell this jobber who had his 15 minutes of fame a couple years back is still getting repaints?!!" I'm sure one of our resident statisticians can officially tell us how many Zack Ryders there are.
MDT is certainly pumping out the Macho Mans, because he's popular and sells well, but why not guys like Rick Rude who was known for his flamboyant tights? Or even more Ultimate Warriors than we already have with his more colourful designs? I get that it's a question of budget, but someone somewhere spent the time to scan these heads and make steel molds of these wrestlers for mass production. So why not churn out as many different Rudes/Warriors/Guerreros and the like as you possibly can? They're all set for releasing a Allied Powers Lex Luger, but why not churn out as many Lexs as we can exhaust?! And it doesn't have to be all in Flashbacks, it could be Basics (like the World Champions Series), or even Best of 20XX.
I thought repaints were a cheaper option than signing the next big contract deal, but do collectors frown on repaints? And why is Zack Ryder still given the time of day?!!

I don't mind repaints at all. Hell rybacks basics have all been repaints so far, and they are all so unique and different. Repaints are a great way to save money and give us updated figures quicker.
Now straight up re releases. I CANNOT STAND. They feel the need to re release the same god damn Cena over and over and over. Not to mention they are bringing back the horrible "best of basic/elite" series so we have to deal with a vast amount of re releases of figures that are ready shelf warming. Great idea Mattel..... Because kids are gonna absolutely want yet another khaki shorts Cena. Right on.

I like re-paints if the designs are unique and colourful. Also the figure has to be a great representation in the first place. That's why Ultimate Warrior is great for repaints because his figures are fantastic and the colours and designs that can be used are vast and varied.

Repaints are fine and needed when they are the main event or popular guys, because there will always be someone getting their first Cena, Orton, Bryan, Punk, Taker, Rey, etc...but guys like Ryder who aren't main event guys or really that popular shouldn't get a repaint more than twice a year. So basically a guy like Ryder shouldn't have more than 2 figures a year. That is more than enough to cover his fans and any new collectors/kids/fans looking for their first.

i imagine zack ryder sells better than a rick rude or lex repaint would. Zacks on tv again. And somehow....he is still popular. WWE puts out alot of Ryder merch. Somebodies buying it. I don't collect basics, nor am i a big Ryder fan. But i liked the attire on that b31 figure. I like it more than the elite 17 attire.
i'm not excited for straight up repaints. For the most part they use different heads on figures at least. Well with elites. I don't pay much attention to basics. I imagine there is more straight up repaints because of the sheer volume of basics that get released.
Honestly. They could release repaints of the 3star macho elite in every color he wore. With the e23 head on it. And i'd buy every one.

Speaking in terms of Legends, I think *some* repaints are good. Red/Black LOD for instance, I have no doubt would sell well. Their Road Warriors attire sold well. However, while most would prefer Jimmy Snuka in his short trunks & bare feet, I really dont think it will sell well enough to justify the repaint. I think anything Macho Man or Ultimate Warrior would sell well as well as select Bret Hart figures.

I don't mind them. Every repaint means budget saved that can go towards a first time figure... If Cena, Ryback, Orton, Big Show etc got new heads every time, we'd see less first time figures.
Regarding Ryder... A year ago when that figure was planned, he was still selling a lot of merchandise. He may still be. Ryder is a favourite among kids.
Regarding the legends... Rick Rude just isn't well-known enough to get figures churned out all the time.
