We have covered Hennig's 02 return as well as his face return to the ring in 92-93. We've discussed his return as guest ref at WM X where he screwed Lex. I remember that was supposed to lead to a feud but his back flared up again and left for another 8 months or so. Don't know how true that is, After that I think he was gold as a commentator. Flipping the pen and catching it, and he was still involved in some storylines here and there. I read that he was supposed to return to the ring and win the IC title but instead helped HHH win it. I just watched The Best of the King of the Ring on Netflix and it totally slipped my mind that he was the guest ref in the HBK/Bulldog title match at KOTR 96. What I don't remember is how the build to that was and what was Perfect's part in it? Why was he named referee?
Hennig was obviously ring ready in 97 because he went to WCW. But why? Does anyone why he left or why he didn't resign? Did Vince not think he'd fit in with the direction the company was going? Or maybe Vince just had it with his coming and going and his back issues over the last 4 years......

I don't know why Perfect was referee at King of the Ring but I do know he was ring ready in 1996.
He was set to face HHH on Raw and they ran an angle where Perfect would steal Hunter's ring valets away from ringside and hyped it pretty good. However, Vince or whomever changed their mind and Perfect ended up turning and joining Hunter and the match never happened.
From what I remember, I believe there was some sort of claim Hennig made with that Lloyds of London Insurance due to his injured back and I don't think Vince would let him wrestle due to that claim. I don't remember the full details though.

He took out that insurance policy in late 94 before he came back in 95.

The angle with hhh was actually one of the better swerves. Took me off guard. As perfect was tormenting hhh he was kind of taking marc mero under his wing. When perfect was set to face hhh on raw they did a "mystery backstage attack" angle where he was too hurt to wrestle but wrangled mero into taking his place and putting the IC title on the line. He then turned on mero in the match and helped hhh win. Perfect and hhh could have been an interesting pairing but the angle was nixed very soon after and perfect disappeared.

Did it have anything to do with HBK being WWE Champion at the time??
I could be wrong, but I thought I heard a long time ago that Mr. Perfect was mad that HBK pretty much had Perfect's spot in the company. So maybe when WCW came calling and offered more money, Perfect chose to take it?? Everyone else was at the time, so why not Perfect too?!?!

while Hennig may have been "ring ready" in 1997 he was a shadow of his former self....he really was.

Perfect turned on Mero to help Trips win the IC Belt. I THINK they came out together the next week on Raw,but by week 3, Perfect was gone and Triple H ran him down in an interview, saying he used Perfect to get the Belt and dumped him as soon as he was done.v and we never saw Perfect in the WWF again til 2002.

Survivor Series 96 I believe..........Perfect was supposed to be on Razor's team. He actually called him out and threw him under the bus saying Perfect abandoned them. Then he announced Savage as their partner.

I never saw any of his WCW stuff in the late 90s. He was the US champ for a while, in the NWO and the new Horsemen. The absolute worse thing ever was the West Texas Rednecks. Man I hated WCW.

WCW was garbage. I even knew it sucked at 11 years old when I first started watching wrestling and knew nothing about the business.

Wasn't a fan of the west texas rednecks either but I heard somewhere that Curt loved it! Did enjoy his run with Rick Rude even if things were on the downward slide at that point. The 2 of them as a pair just fit, obviously as they were great friends in real life. Shame his career was so sporadic during 93 - 96, feel like we lost out.

Hennig should have been in the Wolfpac with Nash.he fit the cocky dynamic of that better.....but WCW in their wisdom had him join the Wolfpac...then turn heel on them and rejoin nWo Hollywood.....I think it was his 5th turn since he joined there......
I will say this though I did think he was suitable to be in the nWo.....made sense to me.more sense than him being a Horseman anyway.
