Has anyone else seen this movie? It's from the same director as Drive, it has Ryan Gosling in it, and the same guy who did the music for Drive. All that made me think the movie would be just like Drive. And wow was I wrong.
If you've seen the trailers you'll notice the name of the movie flashes in english and Thai. Right there that is your first clue who the target audience is. I feel this is a movie made for Thai people with American cast members.
To put it in a wrestling perspective...... this movie is kinda like when you see a Big Star like Hulk Hogan jobbing to a Daniel Bryan just a complete unknown.
The movie itself has about 10 mins of actual spoken dialouge. The rest is silent or music. The odd part is there are scenes where the actors can be seen talking but instead of hearing what they say (getting insight to the story) we get soundtrack over what they say. I watched the special features and Cliff Martinez, the man who did the music for the film, said he was surpised. Martinez said he saw a script with dialouge and was sent a film with no dialouge. He was told that they muted the dialouge cause the accents of the actors were too off and made the dialouge seem comical instead of serious. So they muted the dialouge of much of the movie and put in music.
The bad thing is the dialouge they decided not to leave in the film was the back story to the main character. So the entire movie we see this unstoppable cop destroying people. I saw the film, I had no idea what the cop's name was, who he was supposed to be, nothing. But then in the special features we see the script originally had him as a kind of mytical character known as the angle of vengence.
I really wanted to like this film. I loved Drive, I loved the soundtrack but wow. Only God Forgives STUNK.
Did you guys see it? Thoughts?

I really enjoyed it but I can see how most people wouldn't. Even without much dialog the story is real easy to follow. Tons of violence and I love a good revenge plot.

At least I wasn't the only one to notice that there really aren't any names said lol and then I fast forwarded it to expect a good fight with Gosling and that cop, and instead its just Gosling getting the holy sh*t kicked out of him

Why would you hire Gosling? He contributes nothing to this film other than his star power. His character has no redeeming qualitys. The entire movie we see Chang, but we know Ryan Gosling is in the movie so we wait. Waiting for a moment in which Gosling's character does something. Waiting for that moment in which the bigger star of the movie (Gosling) shines through. Sadly though that moment never comes. It actually got me down to see him get squashed like a bug. And then the end where he is in the forrest with his arms extended? Why? Why would they do this? I cant picture that Chang guy being a star in America. So obviously this movie was made for the Thai/asian markets. This movie was just very poorly written and made. No dialouge, no Ryan Gosling doing cool stuff, no clear back story for the main character (it wasnt till I saw special features that I heard who he is supposed to be), and the worst part...... they go to a Thai house of ladys and we get no shots of the ladys except for one wide shot of the room they're in.

As critically-acclaimed as Refn is, this movie probably doesn't get made if Gosling isn't in it.

The music from Drive is nothing new. Youtube is filled with various talented musicians doing the 80s revival of synthwave/dreamwave whatever you wanna call it for a while now its my fave genre of music. One of the best channels on youtube is new retro wave. Guys like Dynatron, Sellorekt/LA Dreams, Rain Sword are doing some awesome work not to mention a whole host of others.

I'm pretty sure Gosling signed on due to a good relationship between him and the director. It's been monts since I've seen it but I'm pretty sure that his character beat someone to death in his past and is ashamed of it. They focus a lot on him and his hands. The ending is him basically giving up his hands as payback for killing him taking part in the death of Changs wife. He only went out for revenge due to the fact his mother pressured him to and ends up regretting it. This isn't a movie that's supposed to be the classic hero wins movie. Hell if anything Chang is the hero because he is only doing what is right.

I mean they let the father of the murdered girl get revenge only to torture and kill the father for it anyway, how was that right? Also we got NO backstory on Chang. It wasnt till I saw the special features that I heard someone say Chang is supposed to be an angel of vengence. That was something vital to the story which would have helped the audience understand who Chang was supposed to be. I feel the movie was poorly made. In the special features they comment on how lots of dialouge was cut due to actors accents. If an accent is an issue why not film them talking in their native tounge and just subtitle it? Wouldnt that make much more sense than just muteing most of your film?

He allowed the father to get his revenge and then took his arm because he allowed his young daughter to be a prostitute in the first place. Gosling killed the father, not Chang. Chang has a moral compass. He only kills those who have done something to deserve it. Like I said, I enjoyed it but can see what others may not hold it in the same light.

I love Only God Forgives. It's one of my favorite films of the year. It is riddled with metaphors that are misinterpreted. I believe this movie is misunderstood.
