Can anyone explain this to me? I understand people doing it in the early days kinda. And I get that greats like KVH, Yokozuna and others have done it. But in today's WWE , especially where they are all about look, apperance, and safety. Well the barefoot thing dosent appeal to any of these. We are in HD now and no one wants to see these nasty grown athletes feet in high def. Plus I can only imagine the amount of broken toes that one endures.
Anyway I only had this thought because I read an article saying that nNXTs Alexander Rusev is "guaranteed a main roster spot" and I wanted to check him out. He had a great look. Very big and wide. Id like to see how he wrestles. But he wrestled in bare feet. I don't get it. His look is already distinctive enough without that.

I guess it's more of a purist thing. I know quite a few Japanese wrestlers wore tape on their feet, as did a lot of the Anoi'a family. Hell, Kevin Von Erich didn't wear shoes to the ring. Maybe paying homage to something.

I always hated that sh*t and can't watch a match with someone wrestling barefoot without it distracting me.

I can't find it on YouTube ,but there's an extra on the WCCW DVD ,where Kevin Von Erich explains why he did it

I always kind of liked it with guys like Kevin Von Erich, and the Island guys. I know some people feel like they have better movement and balance with bare feet.

Not because of this but because of his painkiller addiction. Sad sad life for those who do this kind of wrestling.

I could totally have wrestled barefoot. Well... I mean if I had any wrestling training, of coarse.

It actually got stuck into the bone of his foot. If the clip would've played through you would've seen JC's manager struggle to remove it from the bottom of his foot.

Wrestling barefoot is kind of annoying and unsafe. It works out for some wrestlers though. I like the idea of keeping a tribal feel/cultural respect throughout the match.

I remember Umaga wrestled barefoot as did the Divas anytime they wore swimsuits to the ring. There was also several GLOW wrestlers as well as a wrestler that went by the name "Jungle Girl" on WOW wrestling.

Its pretty unsafe. Granted Umaga and Yoko and the likes taped their feet, theres otherwise serious ankle injurys at risk.

I hate it. I think feet are disgusting on anyone and I hate seeing them.

Never seen his work what's a good match to watch of his? (NXT please) This is the only match of his I can find on youtube with his current gimmick. Not his best, but it gives you a sort of idea of who he is. He usually has a wooden board with his opponent's name in it which he snaps with his head before the match starts.
