My Dad just happened to dig out a box from the shed that happened to have a whole stash of his World Soccer Magazines from the late 80's to early 90's. They were full of Italian football and Maradona talk, it's unbelievable looking back through them. Anyway, it got me thinking, what were the standout moments/games/memories for you as a kid watching football? Be good to hear some of yours and bring back some memories!
Here's a couple of mine...
UEFA Champions League Final 1997 - Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Juventus
Have very fond memories of this Game. I remember as a young kid Juventus were the team to beat. I used to love there Badge, there name, and be starstruck by Alessandro Del Piero at that time. Then there was Borussia Dortmund. I remember coming into school the day after they beat United in the first leg of the Semi's, and everyone talking about there bumblebee kit. I remember the second leg being massive and everyone watched it, and how gutted all the United fans were the next day at school. Seeing both of those Side's together in the first Champions League Final that I remember seemed perfect at the time to me, and I still remember it clear as day now.
England 0-2 Chile, Friendly
Didn't really have a conception of what a Friendly really meant back in the day. I wasn't allowed to watch most of the game as I had to go to bed, but I remember getting up early before school to watch the rest which I taped, and seeing Marcelo Salas smash in that volley. It was probably the first time I'd seen England lose, and I remember being gutted.
UEFA Cup Winners Cup Final 1998 - Chelsea 1-0 VFB Stuttgart
This whole Tournament still stands out as a huge memory for me. I watched virtually every round of that Tournament. At the time I didn't really understand the difference in the Champions League and the Cup Winners Cup.. or I might of just I seemed to think the Cup Winners Cup was massive, probably because Chelsea were in it. All I know is it meant a lot to me at the time! We lost away in the snow to Tromso and I was gutted, then smashed them 6-1 or 7-1 in the next leg, Vialli used to bang in loads. Then we had Real Betis, who I used to watch loads of on Revista Da Liga every week back when they had Denilson, Finidi George, Jarni, Alfonso and Oli and couldn't believe it when we beat them. We beat Vicenza in the Semi's then Zola won the Final for us.
The World Cup 1998
I still cling on to this Tournament. It pretty much sums up my whole childhood watching football and that whole era, I could still tell you more about that Tournament in terms of squads, groups and results than even the last World Cup just gone, I loved it that much. There were too many standout moments in that World Cup so I managed to find that video of every Goal - definitely worth a watch even for the Kits!
