Hey guys. I usually don't post stuff like this but I feel so overwhelmed with grief. Yesterday we had to put our dog down. His arthritis was bad and getting worse. He couldn't stand up on his own. It was a hard thing to see. I know deep down that we made the best choice for his quality of life. I'm just having a tough time getting through this. He was the first pet I've ever taken care of and we got really close.
I feel like a big piece is missing from me. Like I'm not whole. But I feel peace knowing he's not hurting anymore and that he's somewhere special.
I've changed my username to honor him as geeky as that sounds. His name meant "fat" in Tagalog because he was a BIG dog.
I knew it would be hard. I was preparing myself for this moment, but there isn't enough preparation in the world that could help me make it any less painful.
Just had to vent and I'm happy I have this forum to express these sentiments.

All love, man.
I lost my dog in 2008 and I got his paw print tattooed on me. I know the feeling.
Don't be afraid to just be bummed for a while. Let that grief out, don't build it up.

Sorry for your loss. Losing your pet is one of the saddest things that will ever happen in your life. I lost my Dalmatian, Homer in 2008 and I am still not completely over his death

I know you will miss him. My parents got a chow chow when I was a baby and he's still around but I'd miss him if he died. Hope you feel better buddy

You guys are all too kind. It's good to share in that in a place I've known since childhood.

Losing a pet is one of the hardest things that will ever happen to you.
The love they show is totally unconditional and they are without a doubt your best friend.
You made the right decision. Just know that now he is pain free running at the rainbow bridge waiting for you to come home and see him.

My dog has arthritis in his knee, so he might be reaching the end.
My condolences.

That is horrible news. Putting animals down is one of the worst things. I've yet to have to do that (knock on wood) but eventually I know I'll have to... At least Taba had a good life with a good owner; now he is in doggie heaven.

I've lost multiple pets in my life, and I know it hurts. You've just got to go through it and let it hurt.
Cry your eyes out until they burn, it's actually the healthiest thing to do. Try to find some catharsis in a song that means something to you. According to psychological studies, the average pet death takes anywhere 3 weeks to 3 months stop impacting on a major level, so don't feel like a freak if you're still wanting to cry when people are telling you to just move on.
Also, just throwing this out there, I'm someone who suffers from clinical depression, so if you ever need to vent whatever sadness, anger, anxiety you might be feel on without worry of being judged or need some advice on how to deal with it, just send me a PM.
That goes for anyone else, too.

It's never easy man, I know what it's like. Only thing you can do is just savor the memories and remember that you gave him a good life. It sounds cliche, but trust me it helps. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but i'll go for the ol cheesy quote here and say "Don't be sad because it's over, be happy because it happened" You changing your username actually put a smile on my face, respect. It's not anything huge but it definitely shows you care. And he'd be happy to know that
If you ever need it, feel free to throw me a PM

Really sorry to hear man.
I've never had a long term pet but years ago I used to go to this market/car boot sale place every Sunday in the van back when I was like 10 and they'd set up a stall there. There was an older guy there who had a black lab dog named Jip & I became quite close with him and good friends with the old guy(as well as half the people in the market).
The dog and I formed a really cool bond & he became very trusting of me and would always get excited to see me and I'd take him for his walks every Sunday I was there and hang out with them at their stall. The last time I saw them was around 2006 after I stopped going to the market and by then the old guy had stopped working there & would just visit occasionally, years later in 2011 I returned to visit the other people there who hadn't seen me in a while. When asking about others I found out that Jip had passed away from old age. It was pretty sad to think about as I knew him from when he was like 5 or 6.
That was definitely the closest relationship I've ever had with an animal, it kind makes me want to get my own dog some time, I just love the bond when they get to know you.

Man's best friend for a reason. Crazy to think a dog is more loyal and affectionate than most human beings.

Man, I have 2 border collies who are only 2 but get on my last nerve when I'm home but I love them to death and I actually cried for once in my life when one of my dogs got taken away as he was poisoned and he nearly passed away but the vet saved him. I was left with one dog for a while and it's hard. My dogs are my best friends. Couldn't imagine losing mine.
I feel for you bro, sorry to hear.
