Well, the WWE at the time were doing a Light Heavyweight Division, and I remember they wanted to get some top Light Weight stars. They decided on Taka, Brian Christopher, and... The Undertaker.
Undertaker went to Japan and learned all the daredevil, high flying moves that makes a light heavyweight, and was scheduled to face Brian Christopher at D-Generation X ppv in December for the Light Heavyweight Title, but they opted to go with Taka vs. Christopher instead.
And I just made this all up to amuse myself out of boredom... but hopefully someone does know the true answer to why Taker was there.
Anyone??

Maybe they had a working relationship. Taka and the Great Sasuke both appeared in WWE around this time

I'm sure it was some sort of talent trade in exchange for Taka.

Hakushi was the go to guy for sure. He faced what IMO would be the greatest Wrestlemania match in history in their prime with both Undertaker and The Great Muta.
Just imagine both in their prime. Muta vs Taker would have been magical...

Am I the only one that realized for the first time since Paul Bearer became his manager, Undertaker walked down the aisle with Brother Love?

I really wish we saw more of this today. TNA has been know to do this with CMLL/AAA as well as AJPW.
I remember the ECW/FMW invasion.
Wow, if WWE did this today, and defended the WWE WHC on PPV in Japan against a wrestler in another company..... Would that technically add prestige?

They had at least one other match in Japan, during the first half of 1994, during a house show in Osaka.

What I know from being an ECW mark is that Paul actually started this relationship by bringing in wrestlers first and at the same time WWF/E was starting the light heavyweight division, Paul who was on Vince's payroll told him he could get some guys from AAA and Michinoku Pro since he had been bringing them to TV for some time. So I would assume Vince was just returning the favor

It was really nuts to see Undertaker in a non-WWE ring, but as others have said, it was an agreement with them and WWE for all of the Light Heavyweights they were using at the time.
