Pass it in a state that's in the bible belt...then Ill be surprised. They didn't pass it, a court struck down their ban. And Utah is an extremely religious state.

Ah the almighty federal government here to trample on states' rights. Marriage needs to be privatized, then none of this will be an issue.

Utah might be very religious but they're not as set in their ways as the South that's filled with more Protestants. The states bring up votes almost every year for the people to vote on and almost every year its shot down. Whether its right or wrong is a topic for another thread but I just dont see it being passed or shot down or being made legal throughout the bible belt any time soon.

Ah the almighty federal government here to trample on states' rights. Marriage needs to be privatized, then none of this will be an issue. See, the problem is that the States, separately, shouldn't be able to pass their own laws on things like marriage. I understand that each State is different, and that certain things need to be enforced differently depending where you are in the country (all cities having different needs - ex. Detroit vs Salt Lake City), but certain things should be blanketed throughout the country. To disallow gay marriage is no different than segregating races, whether the Asians in Canada in the early 20th C or Blacks in the US. You're taking away a right that everyone should have, and does have, as long as you're Whi.... straight. Separate but equal (well, they can still live together) is not equal, because it creates separation between ideals and lifestyles. It's great to see the government step in and break this barrier. The current Pope is very accepting of homosexuality. So the bible belt should look to Vatican City as an example of the "New" (old way of God loving everybody) Christian belief system.

I think all heterosexual marriage should be outlawed until gay marriage is legal for all states. The excuse I've heard from reading books or watching TV was that gay marriage made a mockery of the institute of marriage. My feeling is that heterosexual marriage with divorce makes more of a mockery.
As for it being in the bible or being a state law for years...just because something is old doesn't mean it's right. As King 33 noted gay marriage bans are very similar to segregation and segregation was something old and it too wasn't right!

I'm sorry, but until he declares that the church will/must stop standing in the way of marriage equality then I'll believe him. As for the topic, (queue the right wing outrage).

I am curious because I've heard 'suicide - no service allowed,' I've even thought that divorce is a huge no-no for some Catholic churches to accept.

I believe in the earlier times it wasn't allowed, but I'm sure Canon Law no longer mentions suicide as a road block to funeral rites. Plus I think there's always the consideration of what the person's mental state was. Maybe I'll need to do a little more digging on that...I'm not Catholic either.

My cousin died a few years back, he was gay, and we had his service in a Catholic Church with a very accepting (also drunk and kind of racist) priest. Varies on the parish and the priest I suppose.
