How long is this Gym craze going to last?
Every where I look I see a new gym being opened. In former theaters, former grocery stores, former department stores, all becoming gyms.
I dont have anything against Gyms, or trying to get in a better shape, I just think it's a bubble that has to burst. It seems like people only join Gyms cause it seems like a cool thing to do, but not really fully commited to staying in a gym long term.
Is there a lot of gyms by you?
I think it's silly. I mean you think your going to live forever, but you're not. Someone will kill you. Stabbed in the gut, but you got good guns.

I don't understand some of these people who go to the gym. They go and get really big but just what's the point? What exactly are you proving by getting that big? That you can lift heavy objects lol? I understand some people who go to lose weight, or just to stay healthy, but I'll never understand the reasoning behind getting jacked

Not everything has to have a "point" to it, it can just be something that they enjoy doing. Some people play guitar, some people play video games, some people work out. These are all things that can just be fun activities that you don't take very seriously, or they can get extremely competitive between people who want to be the best at what they do.

The gym fad will last as long as home equipment is expensive, yoga pants are worn, & as long as women are on the planet
There has been an interesting and necessary shift in that business market though. It use to be 30 - 90 per month memberships that ruled the system and now it's getting as many people at $10 a month with no contract as possible. They realize that shifting to more for less is the only sustainable business model with people cutting expenses left & right or working out at home.
My brother has one of the 10 per month things where you're not even a member unless you pay & the equipment/facilities were just as good as anything at the overpriced YMCA where you can't even do what you want when you go, since there's no space and too many bodies.

But those are the people who don't know much about it. As soon as you find out what the whole thing is about, then it's just like another thing. It's not any stranger as going into a car and trying to go in a quarter mile, five seconds. I mean, that's, for me, strange." - Arnold Schwarzenegger Powerlifting and bodybuilding are sports, whether you compete officially or just "beat your best" individually. But sure, some people can take it too far. Just like anything. Collecting action figures is fine but then you have the ones who end up on that TV show "Intervention" because they spend the baby's food money on a toy run at the store.

No, I 100% agree everybody is doing it and it has become a major trend. There's a bunch of gym's around me and everybody cares about lifting weights and working out it's ridiculous. I had former friends who work out just to get big and then hassle me, because I stopped back then and they would always think they were better than me and get this cocky attitude. Any moron can lift weights it's not really a special talent to be honest. I understand if people just want to do it to stay healthy that's perfectly fine, but teenager's doing it for no reason is stupid. Most people do it just to impress that's it. I'm a teenager so I see witness things differently then everybody.

I feel like I've got a lot of gyms in my area. Gold's was the big one until they went bankrupt. Then we got Lifetime Fitness. That place is a damn amusement park. My roommates love it, but there's no way I could justify $70/month for a membership.
Recently, one gym near me was bought out by Charter Fitness. I'm only paying $10/month there & I love it. Its a little more chaotic right now with all these new years resolutioners taking up space, but it will be back to normal in a month.

Its a choice of lifestyle. What is there really not to understand about being in the best physical shape you can be? You only have one body. It's just like anything else. I'm sure people dont understand why you collect toys but it makes sense to you.

Who is a basketball player trying to impress? Who is an artist trying to impress? Etc.. Bodybuilders do it for the passion of it. Its an art. There is a certain sensation I get when I hit a new PR, drop a percentage in bf, add mass etc.. It's not about impressing anyone. It's about being the best I can be at something I am passionate about love doing. I would much rather be in the gym training and seeing results than sitting home on the couch.

If you look back in recent history, everyone has been going to the gym at all times. I remember people constantly going to the gym since the early 90s--pretty much as far back as my long-term memory developed--and I know fitness was a big deal in the 80s, too. More are opening up because that's what businesses do. If you're just now noticing it, all that means is that you're just now realizing it. It's no more a fad than owning a computer is.

It's a hobby. I don't see why you don't understand that.

I don't even get this as a complaint. Take that back. I get the concern over fad workouts, or even as a general observation "there seem to be a lot of gyms popping up lately," but I don't understand why a number of people are so against what other want to be doing, which in no way harms or effects you. This level of judgement seems odd to be found on a forum about pro-wrestling figure collecting.. on soooo many levels! lol, it's actually pretty funny.
Instead of offering the hundreds of reasons people might want to work out, I'll share mine... It makes me feel good. It makes me feel generally healthier. I like having an above average amount of muscle and definition, why? Cause I feel it makes me look good, and it seems to resonate well with my GF. It's also a social thing for me; cause I go with one of my best friends. Also, I have other friends/co-workers that enjoy fitness as well, so it's a shared interest.
Now do I need to be mega jacked? No, I don't really want to be, but if it makes others happy, where's the issue?
