Not sure to be honest, but I'm aware that their are several indy film-makers on here. Who probably know a thing or two about special effects.

I've done it with a few different techniques.
Liquid latex Paint Fake blood Toilet paper
Start with a layer of latex. Let it dry. Roll it around in areas to create lumps and other details. Here you can add the tp . Add small layers of latex and tp. Let it all dry... dry brush black paint to create some highs and lows in the gore. Add other colors if desired. Cover in fake blood and let dry.
what my axe originally looked liked
after one layer of latex and some blood.
let it dry , add more to it..and it ended up like this.

Years ago, a kid I went to high school with would use clear Karo syrup (you can get it in any supermarket in the baking/syrup aisle) & red food coloring as blood. It looked amazing, but it would stain.

I have helped a few friends with stuff like this, but its hard to explain how to do some of this stuff without actually showing it too.

When I've made custom props I've mixed a tad bit of sand into the red paint and used a sponge to dab it on as opposed to just painting it on.

I'm Definitely gonna give that a try.. also do any of you have tips or a list of different things to put in a basic fx makeup kit that would be handy to have?

Honestly if you're going for blood and gore, then definitely sponges as opposed to brushes. As well as the basic colors you need to make various skin tones.

Paint. Many colors. Liquid latex. Simple latex appliances. Corn flakes and rise crispies. Use those with latex for different skin effects. Toilet paper. Sponges. Brushes.
