As many of you probably know, it's been freezing here in New York lately. I was wondering if anyone had any good tips about what to do for an iced over windshield on your car.
Usually when I leave work, it's still light out (around 5pm) but tonight I had to work late and it was dark when I left. My windshield was all iced over. At first I could still see through it but once I got onto the parkway, the headlights from the oncoming traffic basically blinded me. I tried to spray wiper fluid but the nozzles were frozen over. It was so hard to see. I eventually got the nozzles to spray some fluid but my windshield wipers just slopped it around and the fluid froze almost immediately, making things worse.
I kept coming within inches of hitting either the divider or cars in the lane next to me. Anyone got any tips on what to do if I'm in that situation again?

I know you're probably in a rush to get home from work. I know the feeling. But when it's at the point where you're windshield is frozen over. You've gotta take care of it before you put that bitch in drive.
Let the car sit. Let it warm up and put on your defrosters. Also buy an ice scraper and try to scrape away at it while you wait. It's one thing if you have a 2 mile drive home (like my job) but another when you have to get on the parkway. Definitely don't chance that again bro.

Yeah I'll do that next time. I have an ice scraper, but by the time I couldn't see I was already on the parkway. I was going good until the lights hit the I've on my windshield and spread.

Did you really need someone to tell you to let the car heat up and use an ice scraper before you start to drive? Please stay off the roads if you can't see. Sincerely, the world.

I have a better solution. Pack your bags and move to California, the only snow we ever get is in the mountains.

If you can spare the cash, look into an auto starter. I used to have one in my old car & it was very helpful in the winter

Just dont be a dumbass and throw hot water on it. at least in the south...where it wasn't cold enough to refreeze...I would get cold or room temp water from the tap & use it to get the ice off & it worked like a champ lol I've never seen someone use hot water but I'm assuming it'd crack the glass?

Ive seen it not only crack but shatter windows before. We actually had someone do it in our parking lot 3 days ago when the snow came though the Southeast.

Soooo no one's ever heard of Windshield De-Icer? I comes in spary bottles and aerosol cans. Wouldn't cost you any more than 3 bucks either. Works wonders for me. But You'll still need to let your care heat at least alittle.

This is a question I's expect from a person living in Cali or Georgia, not a new yorker.

What I do is turn the car on and get the heater up. Then use a squeegee or something harder maybe like an empty gift card and try to peel off the ice with the edge of it. Do this for a couple minutes and then get back in the car and put the windshield wipers on. The heater will help melt the ice and the windshield wipers will clean off the melted water so it clears the window fastest. While this is going on, go peel off the ice from the side doors, because you need to see out of those, too.
