What I do is turn the car on and get the heater up. Then use a squeegee or something harder maybe like an empty gift card and try to peel off the ice with the edge of it. Do this for a couple minutes and then get back in the car and put the windshield wipers on. The heater will help melt the ice and the windshield wipers will clean off the melted water so it clears the window fastest. While this is going on, go peel off the ice from the side doors, because you need to see out of those, too. While I don't have a drivers licence nor do I drive, this is good advice. I'll keep this in mine if I decide to learn how to drive and maintain my vehicle.

Get a spray bottle and had a few caps of vinegar to it. Spray down your windshield before night and you shouldn't have much ice on your windshield the next morning.
