-Six Months Ago-
Chase was standing in the hallway of the 1,800 square foot penthouse apartment belonging to Claudia Fairbanks, the youngest child of Jacques Fairbanks. He was admiring the pictures on the wall.
Jacques and President Kennedy. Jacques and Pope John Paul II. Jacques and Dorothy Dandridge. Jacques and Rod Carew. Jacques and Bob Dylan. Jacques, his wife Joan, their four children, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Claudia was wearing a long black house coat. Her brunette hair flowed down the back of it. She approached Chase.
Claudia, "You know, my father thought of you as one of the family."
Chase smiled. "I appreciate you saying that. He meant a lot to me. It's been six months since he passed away and it only seems like yesterday."
Claudia, "I know. I think about him every day. I miss his infectious laughter. I miss his bear hugs. I miss everything. I just miss him being here. I'd give anything to spend another day with him."
Chase hugged Claudia. "I miss him too."
Claudia, "Do you have to leave so soon. I'd love to talk about Dad some more."
Chase, "Yeah, I do. I have to continue my wrestling training but when I'm done I'll come right back. It'll be a few days since I have to go a ways away but I'll be back."
Claudia, "How are you getting there?"
Chase, "Flying."
Claudia, "Well then I have a surprise for you."
Chase, "Yeah? What's that?"
Claudia, "When Dad passed, we each got something. I got this apartment. The boys each got a car. We all got some money. But Dad wanted you to get something too."
Chase, "I can't, I mean thank you but I don't think I can accept anything."
Claudia, "Please. We all talked about you getting something but we couldn't think of anything but I just figured it out. You can have Dad's plane."
Chase, "What? I can't possibly accept a plane. For one, I don't know how to fly one. Secondly, I don't have the money for upkeep or for any staff. I appreciate the gesture but I can't accept."
Claudia, "No need to worry. We'll pay for it. You just take it. Dad would want you to have it."
Chase, "I don't know what to say. Thank you."
They embraced again. Chase wiped away tears as they pulled apart.
Chase, "I have to go now but I'll be back soon."
Claudia, "Just go to the airport. I'll call and make the arrangements then let you know all the details."
Chase, "Thank you again. This means the world to me."
Chase had the biggest smile on his face as he left the apartment.
-Present Day-
Chase climbed up the few steps the Hawker 800XP plane had and went inside. The walls from waist level up were white while the walls from waist down were artificial wood. The plane contained five beige faux-leather seats and a black couch, a television and a telephone which the stewardess was holding. He waved to her and she waved back.
Chase put his luggage on one of the seats then stuck his head into the cockpit to say hello to the pilots. He was just sitting down in one of the beige seats when the stewardess informed him he had a phone call.
Chase, "Who is it?"
Stewardess, "Detective Bernard Faber of the Danvers, Massachusetts Police Department."
Chase, "Thank you, Laura."
Laura, "You're welcome, Mr. Landon."
Chase, "Hello, Detective Faber."
Faber, "Hello, Mr. Landon. I'm calling to ask if you would be able to come to the station."
Chase, "What is it regarding?"
Faber, "Your case."
Chase, "Oh. Well, I'm on my way to work now but when I am finished, I can stop in."
Faber, "That's great. What time do you think you'll be here?"
Chase, "I'm flying now to the next city I have to be in. I have to work then I'll rest for a bit then I'll fly to Danvers to meet with you. How's the day after tomorrow, around 3PM?"
Faber, "3PM is fine. I'll see you then."
Chase, "See you then."
Chase handed the phone back to Laura and she hung it up.
Laura, "Everything ok?"
Chase, "Yeah, it'll be fine."
Laura, "That's good. Is there anything I can get you?"
Chase, "Not right now but thank you."
Chase got up and stuck his head back in the cockpit and told the pilots he was ready to go. Chase sat back down and buckled the seat belt as the plane took off. Once they were flying steady, Chase took out a pad of paper and a pen and looked intently at what he had previously written. He didn't notice Laura, on the couch, staring at him. Chase picked up the pen and wrote a new entry on the page.

February 2, 2014
One year since Jacques died. 8 years since Mom died. Close to 11 years since I last saw my best friend. There is death all around me. I can't seem to escape it. I need an out. I need to get away from it. I cannot let death consume me. I cannot let those thoughts continue to fill my head. I can't take it any more. I have to do something.
February 3, 2014
How do I get out of here? How do I escape this place? What must be done to get away from the impending sense of death that lingers wherever I go? How do I stop it? I can't take it any more. I have to do something.
February 4, 2014
I just received a phone call saying Dad was in an accident. He spun out after hitting a patch of ice. His car went into a ditch. I asked if he'll be ok and they said "most likely not". When I said he'd get his for what he did to Mom, I always thought it'd be me that would make him pay not some car accident. I'm upset about that. Not that he's hurt but that it was an accident. Maybe he'll suffer.
February 5, 2014
He died. Good.
February 6, 2014
Maybe Ben will be next. One can only hope.
February 7, 2014
I'm being summoned home to talk with a detective about our disappearance 11 years ago. I don't know what he expects me to say. I've said everything I know. I've said it hundreds of times. What could they possibly want now? Since I'll be home I should surprise Ben with a visit. Give him my condolences that that rat bastard of a father is no longer here on Earth. Ben should go join him. They belong together in hell.
Laura interrupted Chase's writing and asked if he needed anything and Chase replied that he did not.
Chase, "Laura, you know it's been a year since Jacques died and I miss him terribly."
Laura, "I know. I was pregnant when he died and I gave birth not too long after."
Chase, "Oh yeah. I'm sorry for forgetting. How is Abby?"
Laura, "It's ok. She's great. She's with my folks while I work."
Chase, "I bet they enjoy having her."
Laura, "They do. She's the best child a parent could ask for."
Chase, "Maybe one day I'll have some of my own."
Laura, "I'm sure you'd make a great dad."
Chase, "Thank you."
Chase smiled. Laura put her hand on Chase's shoulder and he put his on top of hers.
Laura, "So who are you wrestling this week?"
Chase, "Yukio Blaze."
Laura, "Will it be difficult to beat him?"
Chase, "Extremely. He's one of the most decorated WFWF Superstars in history. He's a living legend. They don't call him Mat Magician for nothing. He's one of the greatest of all time. It will be difficult to beat him. Damn near improbable."
Laura, "Wow. I can't imagine having to face someone you know you won't be able to beat."
Chase, "I said improbable not impossible. Am I likely to win? No. But I will try my hardest and do what I need to do to conquer WFWF's Resident Superman. Maybe I'll turn out to be his kryptonite. Maybe he won't make it Superbrawl after I'm through with him. Or maybe I'll fall to the mighty Blaze. Maybe I don't stand a chance. He's one of the best, he may beat me rather quick or maybe I'll take him to the limit. Maybe I'll extinguish the blaze."
Laura, "I'll be cheering you on as always."
Chase smirked, "Thanks."
The pilot instructed Chase and Laura to buckle their seat belts and they did. 10 minutes later, the plane landed and the pilot came over the intercom and announced they had arrived at their destination. They unbuckled their seat belts and stood up. Chase was gathering his luggage and waiting for Laura to open the door. Once she did, Chase descended down the steps and towards the cab that had been waiting. He turned around and waved good bye to her. She smiled and waved back.
Laura went back inside the plane and noticed Chase had left his pad of paper on the table. She quickly grabbed it and ran after him. She caught him just in time. Chase rolled down the window and Laura gave him the pad of paper.
Chase, "Thank you."
Laura, "You're welcome, Mr. Landon."
Chase smiled then told the cab driver where he wanted to go. He waved at Laura as the cab drove off.
