They're both right. There was 1 ending filmed that was then edited into two. Can you elaborate? He's right. While they only shot one ending, through the power of editing their are two possible endings to the show. One can only assume that this may mean possibly the mother lives perhaps? But nothing is known for sure. Still interesting to see what they came up with. It has to have been decent considering they were considering airing it as part of the finale rather then the ending they've had planned for the last 8 years.

They shot the original ending that Bays & Thomas always envisaged, but then in the editing room twisted the footage to create an alternate ending - I'm assuming one where the mother lives. They didn't use it though, and it'll be on the DVD.

Well that was an incredibly disappointing finish to a once great show. The episode was just a complete mess from start to finish. All that stuff they did should have comprised an entire season, not crammed into a single one hour episode. Plus, killing off the mother that we barely even knew was just entirely pointless, and they may as well not have introduced the character of the mother at all. The whole Ted/Robin thing has been redundant since Season 1. Just a really poor way to end a show that was once great, but ended a shell of it's former self.
