I haven't seen this PPV in years and I watched it last night. Wow, I really forgot how good the HBK vs Mankind match is. A really underated match in my opinion. Kept me so gripped all the way through and then when Taker arrives at the end, just awesome. Anyone else have an opinin of this match?

The whole PPV is actually pretty good. I always thought the In Your House PPVs were better than the top 5 for 95 and 96. Plus for $19.99 you get 2 solid hours of wrestling, plus a 30 minute free for all, not too shabby!
But HBK vs. Mankind was one match I wanted to see for years, since the only way to get the VHS of it was from the WWE Magazine back then. It wasn't in video stores to rent - at least not where I lived. So to finally see that match (and entire PPV) was a real treat!

It's in my top 10 favorite matches of all time. Probably in my top 5 depending on the day. HBK seems to get a laughable amount of criticism around here from that time because there are a ton of Bret fans who picked that side in the 90s, no offense, but Shawn from 96-98 was damn near untouchable in the ring imo. Shawn fired off GREAT matches with Bret, Diesel, Bulldog, Vader, Sid, and Mankind in a span of like 6 months. Nash, Sid, and Mankind had easily top 3 matches of their career with Shawn during that stretch. Mankind has called that match 1 of the 2 best matches of his entire career as well, so I'm not alone in that thinking.
Mankind had really amazing chemistry with Triple H and great chemistry with Taker and Kane, but he really doesn't get enough love for how much chemistry he had with HBK because they didn't do anything real substantial together in terms of a feud. The IYH match was really just a get me over monthly feud that turned into something awesome. I'd put that match against damn near any match you can name.

I just watched this on the WWE Network and I'd agree about HBK being untouchable at this time. He was incredible during his '96 title run. An awesome match with Diesel at Good Friends, Better Enemies followed by two great matches with British Bulldog. A fantastic clash with Vader (though I read he complained about the fact that Vader was supposed to go over), and this absolutely incredible match that capped an amazing string.

Upon reading at some of the responses, its a shame 1996 doesn't get talked about often. There were many good matches that took place during that year. To go in line with the topic, Shawn Michaels/Mankind had no right to be as good as it was. Mankind definitely made Shawn Michaels a credible main eventer. Michaels needed that extra oomph during his inaugural reign as the WWF Champion which Mankind gave that to him. Some of the stuff that transpired in 1996 is still fresh in my memory. The Michaels/Mankind match is one of them. Not to mention, this match was ahead of its time. I wished those two would have had more encounters with each other.
I am suddenly feeling nostalgic about 1996 now. Such a good year which I enjoyed fondly.

This match is so good. So much so that Foley mentions multiple times in his books that its one of his top two matches.
This match makes me want to see a Foley/Hart match.

That match was really an indication of where the business was going. Athleticism mixed with hardcore theatrics. Wasn't Sid vs. Vader on that PPV also?

It should also be noted this event took place in Philadelphia, at a time when ECW was hitting its stride, so Mick being able to lift his game physically brought out an aggressive side to Michaels which was good to see, even though at times I look at the match being quite lopsided with Mick taking too much punishment...the stomps on the floor covering for one...all in all, a match that still stands out today.

Such a shame Bret left in 1997 and we never got a Foley/Hart program. What could've been... I know this has been brought up here before but did these toe ever have a televised match?

I never saw this match before. Honestly, the "In Your House" period of wrestling is probably the era I saw the least of, because I was in my early 20s and pre-occupied with college, girls, working, and all sorts of things. But going back and watching this match, it was fantastic. Mankind really was at his best and really never saw this aggressive side of Michaels before.

I can't think of any Bret/Foley matches which is surprising and sad IMO. They could have worked amazingly together.

Bret Hart & Mankind did have a televised encounter: WWF @ New York City, NY - Webster Hall - January 25, 1997Shotgun Saturday Night:Bret Hart defeated Mankind (w/ Paul Bearer) via disqualification at around the 13-minute mark when Owen Hart - who was doing guest commentary for the bout - interfered and attacked Bret as Mankind was caught in the Sharpshooter; prior to the bout, Todd Pettingill interviewed Paul Bearer at ringside; before Hart's entrance, Mankind was attracted to the female dancers and cornered them until Bret made the save; after the bout, Bret battled Owen to the back Source: thehistoryofwwe.com/97.htm
