I know that this is a classic-era post, but I ask it be able to remain here because I think it deals with a universal question that could be applicable to all eras.
Obviously our culture/pop culture has a place for evil, "killer," aggressive clowns. Doink was originally a heel as we all know, and maybe had he have become more aggressive and vicious, do you think he could have been a world champion? Perhaps altering his appearance to some degree, and making him a serious, evil clown similar to The Joker. I think by keeping him heel into 1994 he could have gone on to feud with someone like Bret Hart for the belt and it would have worked well.
What do you think?

WWF World Champion? No way in hell.
WWF Intercontinental Champion? As the original "Evil Doink" played by Matt Bourne...possibly.

the problem was, by 1993, Matt Bourne's career was winding down. Bourne already had a LONG career by this point. He started in 1980. Remember Matt Bourne worked the first Wrestlemania. He had already had a successful career in Portland and was Big Josh in WCW. Doink wasn't going to last long. It was meant to be the end of the road for him. He would've been Doink probably until it went stale in 94 or 95, then move into an agent role if he wasn't so self destructive. Lombardi and Keirn taking the gimmick babyface probably gave it a longer shelf life since it appealed to kids and pushed merch. When Bourne left WWF, after a his brief stint in ECW he pretty much retired.

Bourne was a great wrestler, and he played the gimmick to perfection. I honestly think he could've held the IC title as he fit the "workhorse" mentality of it. Plus, if a gimmick as goofy as the Honkytonk Man could be the longest reigning IC champion, I don't see why a sinister clown couldn't hold it for awhile. WWE champion, though? Vince would've never had left that happen. He wouldn't even let Hannibal Lecter-era Mankind get the title. It's very rare that a guy who is more gimmick than an actual human being holds the top title. Honestly, I'm having a hard time even remembering any straight-up gimmicks that held it in the WWE (aside from the Undertaker and Kane, obviously)

Doink was never a champion, he couldn't even carry the main eventers's bags, He's meant to be a jobber, but if he was a good main-eventer, he could've fought The Undertaker, I know Doink's faced Bret Hart and Randy Savage. But he could've been a good main-eventer but I really don't think he didn't deserve to win the WWF Title. An Intercontinental Title run would've been nice, but not the WWF Title.

Doink was a good enough wrestler and character to get to that level but could never win the title. They missed out on giving him the IC title since Michaels was champion during most of his heel run. Only chance was beating Jannetty since they did have some great matches on Raw around that time but Michaels won it back quickly.

That's a good point on the whole matter....plus I really think Vince would have been way too concerned about the federations image if he had a clown character representing the world championship....if it were up to me ,hell yeah in a heart beat I would have since to this day I still think Evil Doink was one of the most ingenious creations ever in WWE. I wouldn't have cared what anyone thought. If anything, I firmly believe the character should be rebooted into another brand new sinister clown character similar to how Bray Wyatt is being portrayed now....it's way better than trotting out those pathetic Doink imitations once in a blue moon on RAW.

I don't think so. I love Doink, but he was more a folk character than a champion. He has his role in wrestling industry, but not to be in main feuds.

when he debuted I never thought of Doink as a champion, not even IC.
I did enjoy Evil Doink especially the way he beat Crush at WM9. Something so creepy and sinister about seeing that as a 9 year old...
