Ive never been a huge Piper fan, he's kinda like Flair he'll get on the mic and just shout at the top of his lungs all kinds of craziness without making much sense at times but i think thats a tad over critical of him because he always made me hate him as a heel so he must have done something right!
But thats not my beef with him, what i came here to write about is his mental state. I was listening to his interview on Austins podcast (im only getting around to listening to it now after missing out on a lot of Austins early shows) and he rambles on about all sorts of things without actually getting to the meaning of what hes talking about. I couldnt believe what i was hearing from him i almost had to turn it off because it was so awkward at times listening to him and you could tell Austin didnt know what to say at certain points.
Go back and listen to it on iTunes and i swear you will do well to get past the first 15 mins or so. At one stage he started talking about his childhood and he mentions stealing exam papers, hiding in the snow from the natives, going home through the woods with wolves running about, some old red shack he stayed at, he asked austin for a pencil so he could show him division sums lol without actually telling us what all this is about...lol you need to listen to it to know what im getting at it was embarassing the guy was off his head. He just goes from one story to another without actually getting to the meaning of why he brought these things up.
He shows extreme cases of flight of ideas and derailment in his speech along with illogicality at times. Im sure the guy is suffering from some sort of mania, depression or something. Is was really hard to listen to and if you go back and listen to it you'll know what i mean. I was shocked ive just never heard such an incoherent interview.

For those that read his book,
It's probably because of "Wombat".

He comes off really strange on the legends house show too. I think there are definitely some mental issues with him.

I listened to it as well, and agree - and I'm a Piper fan...his WWE doco was at least a bit more coherent...have no idea what it could be from, he's had a hell of a life.

You should listen to his podcast! LOL. Roddy does ramble on a lot and he repeats the same stories as well. I love Roddy as he is my all time favorite. You have to figure he's been wrestling since he's been 16 years old. He's 60 now so that means in one form or another he's been fighting 44 years. Just think about the physical and mental toll that takes on ones brain let alone the body. He's been stabbed a few times, in an airplane crash, nearly died with Johnny Fairplay in a car wreck, been electrocuted, fought Mr. T, done every drug you can imagine, partied with Ric Flair, had cancer, was molested as a child, sever depression, etc, etc. Roddy just being able to form a complete sentence is a miracle and a half.
And through it all he's still the nicest guy you could ever meet, and your biggest fear if you ever piss him off. Just look.

His timeline of the WWF 1984 with Sean Oliver is exactly like that too!
Sean will bring up a date in 1984 where something happened, and you get a 1 hour story on how Piper had Lord Alfred Hayes penis in his hand while talking to a booker.
It seems like the older he's getting the weirder he is getting. He probably does have some brain problems, I mean if Benoit had problems that resorted in killing his family and himself, I am sure Piper's brain isn't that great with the abuse it took over the past 40 years.

he's a 60 year old professional wrestler that while not jumping completely on the steroid train certainly put his body at risk in several other ways as others have mentioned.

ya know...not to just keep adding onto the pile of his demons. But also think of all the friends/workers he fought with that have passed away. Roddy has a lot of ties with quite a few of them. Adonis, Art Barr, Perfect, Bossman, Rude, Von Erich, Savage, and many more, that has to do something to a well being of someone.

Piper is nuts in a good way. He was intense on the mic, and solid in the ring.
Flair was the opposite.

I think a lot with Piper is a work. He was on the wife swap show with Flair and was the normal husband, living a normal life but just happened to be a pro wrestler. He's definitely done something right.

I will say this Roddy Piper had intensity and charisma like no other. Sure he come off as strange but that is expected from what he had to endure for such a long time.

He's really changed over the last 10 years or so.... his promos in the 80's and early 90's used to be a lot of fun and actually had a beginning, middle, and end....
Over the last 8-10 years, when he gets a mic - I tend to cringe.... his references are dated, and they kind of ramble all over the place.....
I'm not sure if it's part of his "act" - he wants people to think he's nuts? Or if he's still trying to do his old 80's act but doesn't have the mental capacity to do it quite the way he used to anymore....
He's still one of my all time favorites....

For the most part I agree that his recent stuff is sometimes rambling or repetitive. But he's one of my absolute all-time favorites, and I think it's unfair to judge Roddy Piper based on recent interviews and behavior.
1) He's a 60-year-old man. Most people I know over 55 tell the same stories repeatedly and often sound out of touch. These are people who have never endured head trauma or excessive amounts of tragedy. It's just what happens when you age. It's not a symptom of having been a wrestler or being nuts. It's just Father Time.
2) Aside from old age, yes, there is something to the idea that he's been banged up physically and emotionally for decades. It does add up, sadly.
3) You simply shouldn't judge a man on how sharp he was in his golden years. We often lose sight of that with wrestlers. 1985 Roddy Piper was a whirlwind, high energy, ridiculously talented and charismatic performer. That guy is simply not going to walk down the ramp on Raw ever again. Nor is 1986 Hogan. I'm happy neither has left us, quite frankly, and will deal with the fact that being 30 years older has significant side effects.
