This is a bit of local news. 48 students will not be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies this year because they did not complete mandatory community service. a link to the news article articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-05-20/news/chi-48-oak-lawn-seniors-banned-from-graduation-ceremony-20140520_1_graduation-ceremony-community-service-forged-documentsThis was news to me. I did not have this mandatory community service imposed on me when I was in high School. I see it as slavery. I always thought community service was a punishment appointed to a person by a court of law. I think if I was a parent of one of these kids I'd be very upset. I'd want my kids at home where it is safe, not working for free at some random place. Is this an Illinois only thing? Do they have mandatory community service near you? Were you forced into slavery in order to be able to graduate? Thank god I wasnt part of this fad.

Sounds like an excuse to hold kids back.

I'm not 100% sure it will happen, but I think one of my teachers said this will be implemented in a few years at my school.

In a way I guess since my senior project had a volunteer aspect to it but it was only like 10 hours with plenty of time to do it so it wasn't much.
Depending on how many hours were forced on kids I would be upset.

I couldn't have done community service if it was required so I'm glad it wasn't. I was in a college prep program that required 30 minutes of homework every day for each of our 7 classes and I had a part-time job at a local restaurant working 15-20 hours a week as dishwasher/busboy.
I can see benefits from getting teenagers involved in the community but making it a mandatory requirement for graduation is a bit much. Plus, it seems hypocritical since most adults do not do any kind of community service unless it is a punishment for a minor crime. Hell, most adults wouldn't contribute to charities if it wasn't a tax write-off.

It's been a requirement in Ontario for the past 10-15 years, I did mine at a theatre and a convention in Hamilton. 40 hours in about a month's time, no problem.

That's some socialism @ss sounding sh*t right there. Unless it's a private school, I don't see this being legal.

Im pretty sure we had something kinda like it but I cant remember what it was (its been 12 freaking years)...nor do I think it was enforced really. I think you had to do like 5hrs maybe or something and it could be given by any teacher. I think I helped clean the gym the day after a game. I made $50, got all my time served and also got to skip class....so it was a win on every level.

I did my senior year. I can't remember how many hours we had to do.
I lied about it either way. There was some form we had to fill out. Mine was total BS. They never looked any further into it.

We were supposed to do mandatory school service and community service, but nobody did and it wasn't enforced (plus they never organised it). We were supposed to have one hour of religious lessons a week too, but nobody went so they cancelled that. They pretended it was mandatory at first but then gave up on that routine.
Mandatory community service for high-schoolers would be a good thing, though. More involvement and interaction within the community should be encouraged. And for adults too, really. It shouldn't be done in someone's own time though, it should be set up via employers/schools/welfare offices arranging an afternoon (or even an hour) a week of community service. For schoolkids, the job should be carefully managed to ensure safety.

over here we have "work experience week" where you pick somewhere you'd like to work and the school asks them if they'd be willing to accept a voulenteer for a week. I worked in my old primary school with a bunch of 7 year olds it was fun.

In New York, we had to do it Senior Year. It was a pretty big thing because all places I called had participated in the past with the High School community service. I went to this one place and planted trees for like 3 hours, never went back and just lied on my entire report. So, shows how much they really care.

Everyone is my class was required. I didn't do it.
But I also did a 4 year stint, rarely showed up, and didn't graduate, only to get my GED and attend college courses on my own terms.

Nope. Even if they did I wouldn't. Being forced to do anything outside of school by the school is absolute horse crap. In 5th grade we were forced to be in the band, which means we were forced to go to all the band activities, it was all so boring, and it was bullcrap.

I had to do community service when I was in 8th grade a few years back for civics class, the teacher said it ties in with how to be a good citizen and blah, blah, blah I hated it.
