Remember when Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart each had 5 WWF title reigns and it was a HUGE deal? These 10+ title reigns are absolute sh*t and pisses me off to no end. Completely agree with you there man.

Remember when Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart each had 5 WWF title reigns and it was a HUGE deal? Yeah, back when the main guys hardly wrestled on TV, there were only a handful of PPVs and half of them would have the champion in tag matches. Time moves on. Titles change hands more frequently, and have done since the late nineties. If Rock, Austin, Bret etc had the longevity that Cena has had, they'd have had tons more title reigns too. Examples like Bret's "pointless" Final Four title win would have been more plentiful in his career if he was full-time wrestling into this generation.

Bret Hart's 4th WWF Championship reign is one of those rare times that hotshotting the championship led to a huge moment in history. Bret's 4th reign was used as a vehicle to establish the two main matches for WrestleMania 13. Those matches being Sid vs. Undertaker for the WWF Championship and one of the best matches in 'Mania history with Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart in a Submission match. While it took less tan a year to see the Tag Team and Intercontinental Championships changes hands on RAW, it took four years after RAW's inception for the WWF Championship to change hands. That being when Bret Hart lost to Sid on the February 17th, 1997 episode of RAW. One has to remember, at this juncture in 1997, Bret was on the twilight of his career.

Bret's 4th reign was used as a vehicle to establish the two main matches for WrestleMania 13. Yup, just like Cena's 9th reign was used to establish the main match for SummerSlam 2011.

I have kept the first 3 reigns the same. Sure 3 months into his first WWE Title reign his weaknesses were exposed but the guy brought legitimacy to the title and his lengthy reign (with JBL and HHH's reigns) were the something refreshing after the constant title switches of the attitude era. You could argue Edge deserved a longer first reign but the fact is he had little credibility in the main event. Until he cashed in MITB he had been feuding in the upper midcard and simply wasn't ready to walk into WM as the world champ.
Every reign after that was pretty meaningless to me. Winning the title from Batista at WM26 seemed special but was ruined when he dropped it 3 months later to a still unproven Sheamus. His reign after defeating Rocky at WM29 was solid and I thought it wasn't too bad. Basically everything from 2008-2012 were meaningless and during an era when the title was hot potatoed every 3 weeks.
I'll probably get flack for this but its a shame Cena got hurt in 2007. At the time it sucked but looking back on it he had an entertaining 13 month reign as champ that brought legitimacy to the title. And unlike Punk's 400+ days reign where he wasn't pushed as the top dog, Cena was unquestionably the top guy.

"Pointless" title changes were rare back then. Whereas they're much more common now. The only reason Bret won the title at Final Four was because the boy toy 'lost his smile' (aka didn't want to drop the belt to Bret) and Vince had to scramble to rearrange the Wrestlemania lineup. In hindsight it was the only decision they could've made. If Bret went into Wrestlemania 13 as the champion who knows what history would've been altered. Anyway I think we can all agree Championships hold more prestige when they haven't been passed around like hot potatoes. So many guys from back then, great wrestlers, were never world champions. But nowadays every half-decent wrestler has had their turn as "world heavyweight champion."

I wouldn't have Edge drop the belt back until Mania like OP said and also wouldn't have Edge lose at Unforgiven. Could you imagine the heat he'd get sending Cena to Smackdown? It was close enough to the Rumble in my opinion to have Cena win in 07 and come back to Raw for his belt, ending their year long feud.
