Congrats on getting your GED! But I can't stand people wanting sympathy from others just because they overcame drug and alcohol I don't care if I sound a bit of a jerk, but I never did any of that stuff so where's my sympathy and endorsement. No where because I don't ask for it. Anyways congrats on your GED you're taking steps into a better future and life. The fact that you never did any of it is why you don't understand how big of an accomplishment it is to overcome it. Good on you for never going down that path (I never did either), but addiction isn't a choice, starting is. The decision to start was dumb, and I'm sure you've done some dumb stuff in your life, too. Point being, it's far harder to stay clean than it is to get clean. And as for where your endorsement is, it's in your body that you didn't destroy. Also, you shouldn't assume you know how or why someone has done what they've done. Not only have you not lived their life, but everyone reacts to things differently. My brain isn't wired the same as yours, so if I went through a horrible breakup, my natural reaction would be entirely different than if you went through the same exact breakup. One last thing, if you read the paragraph without any predisposition of cynicism, you can clearly see he wasn't looking for praise from us but sharing something he's proud of. He's excited and wanted to tell someone; simple as that. Anyway, congrats on the GED. I'm surprised to see how many of us there are, considering how we're usually looked down upon. Fact is, high school diploma or GED, it all means the same thing. It's like $10 as two $5s or 10 $1s; end of the day, it all spends the same. Honestly I never done any dumb stuff in my life as I always stayed away from stupid things a person or my friends made. I only wanted to go to school, finish it and move on. And I don't assume I know his reasons for doing drugs and alcohol I'm simply just stating we shouldn't congratulate him for not doing them anymore? He should of known it was a bad thing from the start. It's just like congratulating someone for not murdering anymore, it's illogical. I congratulated him for getting his GED, but not for the drugs and alcohol like everybody else is.

But like others have said you don't know what led me to those things. Everyone hits a rough patch at some point. I don't understand what you don't get about that but your coming across as a very "better than you" type of guy. I'm not going to argue because this thread has nothing to do with the topic. Sure one or two people acknowledged it but once again I was only mentioning it to put into perspective why I was in the situation I was with schooling. Believe me I would have loved to stay in school and get an actual diploma. I get that, but there's no need to run me down about something I take great pride in overcoming. Especially when the thread is not about that. And your acting like I'm trying to garner simpathy which is not true at all. I made a stupid ing decision but if you knew anything about addiction you would know its not all about decisions you make, it can be a deeply rooted thing. I just ask that you please respect my wishes and leave the subject alone. No needs to ruin a (surprisingly) positive thread.

I would also like to add that Science was surprisingly the most difficult part of the GED test. I was extremely worried about the math and actually got honors on that section.
Really set the pace for the rest of the test.

I'm not coming off as a 'better than you' guy if I did you would know trust me. It's the fact that some people here are congratulating you for overcoming alcohol and drugs and you simply garnered the sympathy. Yes congrats on getting your GED for the 3rd time. I don't congratulate you for your mistakes and bad decisions making, why should I? I'm not a jerk if I don't feel the need to. People should NOT and I repeat NOT congratulate someone for overcoming bad decisions or addictions whether it's drugs, murder, alcohol, debt etc. I shouldn't feel the need to feel sorry for you and it doesn't make me a bad person if I don't. I rather be honestly arrogant than be a part of the hypocritical humanity.

Congrats on the GED, and you know something? To hell with that guy - congrats on getting clean and sober, too. Addiction and substance abuse runs deep in my family, and I've lost a good number of friends over the years either to that path in life, if not the ultimate consequence. The ones that are still losing that battle or have come to a loss don't have what you've come up with, which is the wherewithal to find SOMETHING worth living for, whether it's family, friends, the pursuit of self improvement, or whatever it is you found to strive for, and that's worth congratulating you a hundred times over for.
There are times that I wonder if the GED route would have been the better suit for me. I was fortunate in high school to have had a circle of support that kept pushing me, but even with that, my own motivations and abilities only took me as far as "just" graduating - skin of my teeth, bottom of the class, that whole book. Eleven years later, yeah, I've got a degree and a slamming job and all, but I sometimes wonder if it needed to take eleven years and if maybe the process of getting the GED without the push of doing it "just cause" would have maybe strengthened my resolve earlier on in regard to education.
Either way, good in you in each respect.

I gotta say between this forum and the remaining family I do have all this support is becoming overwhelming. I don't think I've ever heard this much praise for anything before. Not that I've deserved it in years but it really means a lot.
