how did he become aba taker? wasnt really watching wrestling during that time frame so how did he go from looking like a mortician to a biker? was he gone for awhile and just showed up like that or was it a gradual transition? any matches or undertaker dvds to watch explaining this would be useful too. thanx.

He slowly started to become ABA Undertaker in September of 1999 actually. Then he got injured and when he came back he was the ABA Undertaker.
I remember a Smackdown in 1999 right before the September PPV where he was dressed all biker like and was gonna wrestle in jeans and such, but he didn't for some reason. I wanna say he was injured so that's when he left and didn't come back until Judgment Day 2000.

- Taker was dealing with injuries during 1999 and decided to take some time off around sept 99, during his time off rumor was he was going to retire but decided to come back with something different.

He was meant to return during the Rumble in 2000, but suffered another injury. A real shame to be honest.
He turned down a Casket Match with Triple H and walked out, saying that Vince 'couldn't tell him what to do.' Then just out of no where returned at Judgement Day 2000.

People, look here! I said it was 1999 that he started it, and here's the video proof.
He was starting to be the American Bad Ass in September 1999 before he left with the injury.

He had started going in that direction starting in 1997 when they first started showing him out of his ring gear and basically as a human being instead of a zombie. He even did a full sit-down interview in Kuwait while WWF Champion in 1997 which Vader ruined by killing the host.
Then, they went the complete opposite direction in 1999 with the Ministry stuff only for him to eventually fully turn into ABA Taker.
Edit: Here is ABA Taker back in early '97.

I don't think it's really a matter of "they started going that direction." That was just Undertaker in his street clothes. Most wrestlers were shown like that at one point or another after '96. But I wouldn't say it was ABA Undertaker in 97. It's just what the guy dressed like in real life. His character was still very gimmicky until 99. But after KOTR his interviews stopped being so forced and he started talking like himself. Then when he teamed with Big Show he would appear in his street clothes. By that time you could say they were going in that direction. But it always seemed to me more like Taker himself was tired of the evil character and started going in that direction by himself.

ABA Undertaker was an underrated gimmick Still my favourite. Though it's 100% through Nostalgia. I completely understand why people have love for the other gimmicks he's had. I started watching WWF around Royal Rumble 2000, so for me I never really knew The UnderTaker on screen. Just knew of him through figures and stuff. So when he debuted on Judgement Day 2000, it was my first real dealing with him. Awesome.

It's probably why Cactus Jack is my favourite face of Foley too.

The gimmick was cool, but there was really no back story to it.
