I sat and watched this for the first time tonight and wasnt too impressed.
Heres my beef with it.
The first match seemed like the ppv was off to a great start but after 20 mins or so into it the match ends with a DQ with Venis hitting the ref. WTF?? Make fans sit through 20 mins and then end it with a terrible DQ.
Then there was the final match between Austin and Taker. Austin hit Taker with a low blow before giving him the stunner and after Austin wins, the Undertaker gets up and shakes hands with Austin?? Your not going to shake hands with someone and show them respect after they give you a low blow. Who was booking during this time?
Ofcourse i could knit pick the other matches which werent great but i thought id get some peoples opinions on these two issues i have. Thoughts?

For 1998 standards, SummerSlam 1998 was good. Looking back, it hasn't aged well. The only match worth going your way out to see is Triple H/The Rock. Steve Austin/The Undertaker had such an awesome build leading into the match. By this point, the Attitude Era was slowly reaching its peak. I should mention that I have not seen this event in its entirely since it originally happened. From what I can remember, the crowd was hot for parts of the show. The main event didn't deliver at all. After Austin blanked out and asking Earl Hebner where he was at, the rest of the match was a disaster.

Wasn't Russo booking 1998? Should explain a lot. Lots of long drawn out matches with DQ/Run in endings.
You didn't even mention Kane coming out of the dumpster.

I liked that PPV actually, but then I was 17 years old when I watched it live, and I think if I enjoy it now it's mainly cause of the nostalgia that it brings while watching it.
I feel that Triple H vs. Rock in the ladder match was horrible though. I know a lot of people like it, but I never liked it. It never clicked with me. Triple H and Rock (at least to me) were never good when it came to gimmick matches.
The NAO beating the hell out of Foley for 10 minutes was what it was.
The opening match having a DQ was weird. They should have had X-Pac vs. Jarrett open the show, go 10 minutes, have Pac win and the fans would be all up and ready for the night. So they should have totally changed the Brown/Venis and Jarrett/Pac matches around in place position.

I've never cared for the show and have said that on here several times.

It's held in high regard and I never understood why. I liked the opener though the finish was dumb. X-Pac and Jarrett was decent and Triple H/Rock, while overrated, was really good. Besides that, nothing else is worth it. Even Undertaker/Austin, while good, was disappointing.

Like others, I too haven't seen this event for over 10 years. I just remember WWF being super hot that summer (see what I did there?!) and the build for Austin vs. Undertaker was HUGE. But I just remember watching and feeling a little empty after it was all over.

Austin vs. Undertaker matches were mostly bland. I don't know why, two great guys who nearly always had great matches but they just had no chemistry together.
Kinda like Bret and Shawn.

Not to mention they had like a dozen PPV main event matches and not one is memorable. In fact, I think the first Austin vs. Taker match is their best going all the way back to IYH: Cold Day in Hell.

If Final Four counts, then that's a sweet match. But other than that, all their other matches are completely forgettable. Pretty much the only memorable thing for me is Austin KOing himself on Undertaker's head.

But I just remember watching and feeling a little empty after it was all over. this pretty much expalins it. the hype was off the chart incredible, with the PPV debuts of Edge and Val Venis, super-over DX and Sable, the months-long stryline between Triple H and Dx vs The Rock and the Nation coming to it's apex point, and the months long build to Austin vs Undertaker finally paying off. the WWF was red-hot in summer of 1998,and this card was the culmination of that. sadly,it was just alright, and in some spots downright bad. but I think, honestly,it's more fondly thought of because of the nostalgia factor more than anything else. WWF and WCW were both running strong that summer,it was a great time to be a wrestling fan!
