Hey guys, I just read about this story on CNN.com and just felt obligated to at least mention it here because I feel it deserves mentioning. Here's the link to the story, so you can check it out for yourselves: www.cnn.com/2014/08/01/justice/new-york-choke-hold-death/index.html?hpt=hp_inthenewsThe video of the incident was posted earlier, but I can't seem to find it now. I'm sure it's still there somewhere, but I'm just here to voice MY opinion on it. I believe the action by police was completely uncalled for, regardless what this retired cop is saying. I think he's just voicing his biased opinion because he's a former cop himself. This could have and should have been handled in a much better way. It didn't call for numerous police officers to jump the guy and choke the life out of him. He wasn't THAT serious of a threat, come on. He was fine before the police laid their hands on him. This situation didn't call for action like that. Just another tragic case of police abuse. It's because of stories like these that makes me hate and not trust police officers. They are supposed to help you. Not choke you to death. I don't know what I'd do if that were my brother or whatever getting choked to death like this poor guy. There's no question I would sue. Officer Daniel Pantaleo is the one who did the choking and there's been numerous complaints filed about him. He's a rotten cop who should be fired from the force because he simply cannot be trusted. After seeing this video, I wouldn't want him helping me, that's for damn sure. He'd be doing more harm than good, that much is obvious. Anyway, I am sad that this guy unfortunately died from the action by police. That's just my opinion on it. How about you guys??

So much going on about this story here on SI, it's pretty crazy.

It's ridiculous that he used a damn chokehold on the guy which ended up killing him. The NYPD will probably end up canning his ass anyways since I'm sure that lawsuits are well on their way against both the NYPD and Pantaleo.

You don't trust an entire work force based on this one incident?

You don't trust an entire work force based on this one incident? There have been NUMEROUS incidents of police abuse over the years and it makes me sick. We are supposed to trust these friggin' guys and look what happens. Did you ever see the video of the cop that ran up behind a woman and shoved her into a brick wall?? That one is brutal. Very hard to watch. I would post the video here, but I won't. Just go on YouTube and search up "ultimate police brutality compilation" and it'll come up. I just find it SO hard to put trust and faith with these people after seeing all these examples. It my own personal feelings towards them. Without question, they do A LOT of good, I'm not denying that. It's just when I see them do the bad, it changes my opinion. You give someone too much power and they end up abusing it.

It's a very difficult subject. I want to be a police officer myself..in fact I am going to school to get a degree in criminal justice, but there is no denying there is a problem with power abuse in some departments. I know how I am, and I know I would never even think of doing some of the stuff I have seen/heard about. But you shouldn't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

You don't trust an entire work force based on this one incident? he's using one example but there are countless incidents people could claim here are my reasons: in Texas, where I'm from...police got a no-knock arrest warrant for some guy, but went to the wrong house -- the man, (innocent) that they barged in on, heard people outside at 4am or so & thought someone was breaking in, so he had a gun & pointed it at the door but didn't shoot....they knock the door in & he gets killed by police because somebody had the wrong address and they saw him as a threat - their statement was basically "that shows what happens when you point a gun at us" another Texas man was shot because of a wrong address issue - he was in his garage using a wrench & a cop claimed he had a weapon - the cop shot the guy but didn't call for an ambulance because when a few more cops came, they realized the mistake & had to huddle up and get their story straight....the innocent victim luckily was able to pull his phone out of his pocket and call his sister -- the cop realized he'd contacted someone, so only then called for an ambulance instead of letting the guy bleed out Houston cop again goes to the wrong house, walks up to the backyard of a man's house, dog is of course barking because of an intruder...cop shoots the dog dead, was simultaneously telling the guy to put his hands up & yet, control his dog - shot the dog 2 seconds after telling him to restrain the animal (caught on voice recording) Houston Chief of Police wasn't paying attention while driving downtown & nailed a pedestrian with his car on a turn and knocked him into the middle of the road (luckily no car was going past) & they suspended him for 1 whole day (I think with pay) & if the guy wasn't a lawyer that got hit -- they would've gotten away with claiming it was somehow the pedestrians fault...caught on video but still tried to claim no fault on part of police there are always good & bad but cops stick together & cover for others, even if they don't want to I've known a few cops personally -- 2 wanted the power to boss people around & control & look for a reason to be physical with people; the 3rd told me she was itching at the chance to use her taser (mentioned that cops have to only feel what it's like at a low level but then use it at over twice as high on "criminals" & begged anyone she knew to let her try out her newly learned submission holds) I don't hate cops, but I'm not foolish to think that they're all going to have morals & ethics that align with proper human etiquette -- they can make your life $*&%* and get away with whatever they want

I know plenty of good cops as well I'm sorry to generalize. When I say "these people " I mean the abusive dirty ones. This is just ing disgusting. And then all those Texas stories. And how many of these things happen every year that we DONT hear about because someone wasn't there to tape it ? The guy is still walking the streets. That is what's really killing me. He made murdered a man on film and got to walk around and keep his job like nothing happened. Guarantee he has absolutely no guilt either. Just read this same officer is facing SEVERAL other pending charges including making ppl STRIP AND SQUAT IN PUBLIC. Why was he still on duty? Are these people god? Are they invincible ? Also. @monoxide23 I went to two years of classes with intentions of getting a criminal justice degree and joining the academy. Well in that 2 years I was harassed and Abused physically and mentally by several different cops on several different occasions. And it's almost like it was Just because I'm a big guy. Like what are they intimidated and feel power over us because they have a belt filled with deadly weapons? One guy who really really messed with me bad ended up losing his leg in a motorcycle accident. Karma is a bitch mr. Daniel Pantaleo Well all of those encounters changed my mind completely and I never ever want to become a cop or be around them in general.

I know right! My phone was pickpocketed last week it was brand new not a mark on it had it when the phone came out round about December last year I contacted the police all they did was send a victim and support BULLYING? and ATTACKED letter saying if you need help contact this number blah blah
The phone network blocked it logged out all of my apps took the credit card details of and got the police in a different area to block it then they put it on the stolen phones list so if they try to sell it, it will be classed as stolen so the person they sell it to e.g cash convertors will keep it and not give them any money

Mr. Old School posts this topic at least once per year. Are there bad police officers? Yes. Are there bad doctors, firefighters, nurses, newspaper delivery people, garbagemen, waiters and waitresses, dentists, etc. also...yes.
Police officers are people just like everybody else. They are also doing a job just like everybody else. If someone is an ass or an overall corrupt person outside of work then they are going to be the same way at their job. It is very unfair to categorize all police officers one way just because of a bad few.
Basically, you are doing to police officers exactly what you don't want them doing to you. You are putting them all in one category and showing prejudice and discrimination towards the entire group and profession.
Also, all of these compilation videos and clips never show the entire call or the entire story involved. They just show the police allegedly brutalizing someone for no reason which is usually not the case. There is no job in the world that is more scrutinized than police work. Every town in every state in America has a police department. If you look hard enough you will find mistakes just like you would in any other profession. The difference? Police officers are required to make life and death decisions in split seconds. It is not fair for anyone to play armchair quarterback in those type of situations. It's easy to sit behind a computer or in front of a TV and judge when you're not actually putting on a bulletproof vest just to go to work every day where you will be handling an unknown variety of dangerous people and situations.
When the guy behind the register screws up your order at Taco Bell, nobody gets hurt. However, when a police officer screws up on the job it could mean the difference between life and death.
It's important to remember that police officers see the worst of people at their worst moments and in the worst situations. Police officers see things on a daily basis that the majority of people will never see in their entire lifetime.
I am a police officer, my father was a police officer and I am damn proud of it. I speak for myself, my department and my profession when I say that we are the good guys, we are here to help and we are here to keep you safe. I have already read some things in this topic that disgust me so I doubt I will be back in here to comment any further.
In response to those who hate us and joke about killing us, if you have so much hate towards us then don't bother calling the next time a crime is committed against you.

Tryin' to make ME feel bad about posting this story and sharing MY own personal feelings toward police officers. It's almost like in your opinion I can't or shouldn't be doing it. Well, too damn bad buddy, I'm gonna do it whether you like it or not. These topics come up whether you like it or not and I take it upon myself to mention them because they deserve mention. Should I just sweep it under the rug and pretend like this never happened?? Come on man. This poor guy was choked to death by some loser cop who should've been fired a LONG damn time ago. Okay, since you are a police officer, let me ask you this. How do you feel about this officer Daniel Pantaleo?? Do you feel he did the right thing?? Do you think his actions were necessary? Would you have acted in the same fashion?? Probably all tough questions for another cop to answer seeing how you saw him take action in the video, but I'm still VERY interested to hear what you've got to say about it. I already said cops do A LOT of good, so certainly they are not all bad. It just make me ing sick to my stomach when I see cops brutalize people and take clear advantage of the power they are given. Even if we did see the whole story in the videos, are the cops still justified in kicking and punching and pushing people around and abusing them??

I don't know the full story. Either were you. It's easy for you to sit and judge and rant from your computer chair. I live it 40 plus hours per week. I've said my piece and there is nothing left for me to add here. I'm gonna go on about my business as should you. I understand you have your feelings and views on things and I have mine.

Okay, fair enough. I can accept that. I posted the story and said what I wanted to say. Now others can share their opinions and views on it.
It's just a terrible, sad situation all around. For the victim and police. Nobody comes out a winner in situations like this. Very sad and unfortunate.
