Slappy unfortunately is ignorant of what the situation was at the time. Without condoning or endorsing what happened, it must be understood that the US was entering it's 4th year in the war. Now, we lost 1.25 million in those 4 years, with a staggering 1 million in the period of June '44/June'45. I'm ignorant because I abhor dropping two atomic bombs and the subsequent death and destruction? How about we remember the Japanese that FDR rounded up and locked in camps. "No one" wants to talk about that. That's a bad part of our history so we can just ignore it. If you are going to make excuses for why it happened then you are condoning and endorsing it. We were in Afghanistan and Iraq much longer. Should we have just dropped atomic bombs on them?

Oh, no, see, I was just sharing art. It was you that turned it into a political discussion.
Now, here's where ignorance rears it's head again... We don't do nuclear bombs anymore. There are other forms of bombs that could be dropped. If you honestly, 100% believe that if in the next year we were to lose 1 million soldiers that something drastic wouldn't be called for... well then that's your opinion, and you are most certainly entitled to it.
I'm confused how pointing out facts is condoning dropping an atomic bomb?

I'm confused how pointing out facts is condoning dropping an atomic bomb? You didn't expect things to get political? How could you not expect that? The title of your post is "reflections." I'm reflecting on how horrible it was. The US Army has 1.1 million total active, reserve and National Guard personnel. I think if we lost the entire Army, people would be clamoring for something drastic to happen. I would not support anything that endangers the lives of innocent civilians. You are making excuses for why the bombs were dropped. I believe someone would only make excuses if they condone it.

Nah... I posted art. I didn't say anything. I expected responses like "wow, powerful stuff" or "I didn't know U2 wrote a song about that". I didn't expect anyone accusing me of condoning the murder of 100,000 innocent bystanders by sharing facts that I learned in high school. Also... dude... you just said that if we lost 1 million soldiers people would call for something dramatic. Why can you say the exact same thing as me, yet still say I'm condoning what happened?

I just don't see how you could not have expected a political discussion to come of it. I said people would call for something drastic. I didn't say I would be one of those people. I would not be one of those people. It would be and is wrong to kill innocent civilians. There are people today that support dropping nukes on Afghanistan and Iraq. Those people are wrong. Just like those who supported dropping the bombs on Japan.

Regardless of any tragedy in history, those countries found ways to rebuild what was lost. Japan rebuilt themselves after the events of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The German people became united after the Berlin Wall. Currently, New York City is slowly rebuilding the World Trade Center. People tend to look down on the President's policies but many historians in the future would understand why each President did what they did. Harry Truman did what he felt he needed to end World War II. Where there any casualties? Yes, it came with a price to prevent many more people from dying. People didn't like a lot of the polities President Bush made after 9/11 but it was a necessity to prevent future terrorist attacks on American soil.
